My name is Tanya, and I tutor young people and adults in the following areas: reading, writing, literature and English as a Second Language. I received my undergraduate degree in Communication Arts, with a minor in English, from Xavier University (Ohio). Shortly thereafter, I trained to become an ESL tutor and went on to teach English to students from all over the world. For five years in the late 1980s, I lived in Japan teaching English in several major cities, including Tokyo.

Since returning to the states, I have spent most of my career teaching part time for Chicago Public Schools (ESL and GED for parents) and city colleges, and tutoring language arts in a charter high school for at-risk youth. Soon I will continue working on a master's level education program at National Louis University.

As a tutor, I believe in establishing a strong, positive relationship with the learner. This is the foundation upon which success will be built. Once I know the level of ability, I strive to create interesting lessons that will keep the student engaged in the learning process. I evaluate each session so I can fine tune for the next meeting. Paying close attention to the details of each lesson, and the student's level of retention, helps me keep our sessions on track as we work toward the student's goal.

I speak and understand basic Japanese and Spanish; and I'm also computer savvy.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have expertise in teaching all aspects of the English language, written and spoken English in particular. I can help with any language arts assignments or test preparations in this area.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching/tutoring English as a Second Language for more than 20 years. I began as a tutor for Literacy Volunteers of Chicago after completing their training course. I received certification through the English Language Institute in California. My undergraduate degree is in Communication Arts. I spent 5 years teaching English in Japan. Currently, I teach English to parents of Chicago Public School students part time. Teaching English is my true passion.

Grammar

I am a specialist in teaching grammar using techniques that make the fine details of the English language easier to understand. If you need help with a written assignment, if you want to improve your overall skills, or prepare for an exam, I am at your service.

Japanese

I began studying Japanese some years ago as I prepared to move to Japan to teach English. A combination of private tutoring, formal classes, and independent study helped me develop basic fluency. I lived in several major cities, which allowed me to engage all aspects of the culture. I loved my time there, and since returning home, I have taught basic Japanese (reading, writing, speaking) to family members and children in day camps and schools. The key to helping others learn this language is to make it a fun experience.

Literature

I love reading, analyzing, and writing about literature! There are so many aspects to studying this subject, and it can be confusing. I can assist you as you write a paper or try to get a handle on literary terminology. Hopefully, I can also help you enjoy the many genres of literature.

Reading

I specialize in helping teens and adults improve basic skills, which includes reading. I possess many years of training and experience. It is important to me to offer my expertise to those who want to further their education, even after long absences from formal classes.

Writing

As a writer, I am well trained in all aspects of the subject. I can help improve your skills in every area from grammar to essay writing and beyond. Working with teens and adults is my specialty.
