My name is Tanya, and I tutor young people and adults in the following areas: reading, writing, literature and English as a Second Language. I received my undergraduate degree in Communication Arts, with a minor in English, from Xavier University (Ohio). Shortly thereafter, I trained to become an ESL tutor and went on to teach English to students from all over the world. For five years in the late 1980s, I lived in Japan teaching English in several major cities, including Tokyo.
Since returning to the states, I have spent most of my career teaching part time for Chicago Public Schools (ESL and GED for parents) and city colleges, and tutoring language arts in a charter high school for at-risk youth. Soon I will continue working on a master's level education program at National Louis University.
As a tutor, I believe in establishing a strong, positive relationship with the learner. This is the foundation upon which success will be built. Once I know the level of ability, I strive to create interesting lessons that will keep the student engaged in the learning process. I evaluate each session so I can fine tune for the next meeting. Paying close attention to the details of each lesson, and the student's level of retention, helps me keep our sessions on track as we work toward the student's goal.
I speak and understand basic Japanese and Spanish; and I'm also computer savvy.
