People are always amazed that I possess a Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. They usually assume that I was always a "natural" at math and science. They don't realize that things never came easy for me. I am a very slow and methodical learner. However, as the son of two school teachers, I always possessed an excellent work ethic. Over the years, I had to master my ability to self-motivate and self-correct. Understanding what I didn't know was critical to my development. This knowledge showcased for me what needed to be my focus. Eventually, I forged myself into a person who is comfortable learning anything.
I believe people are capable of improving their knowledge base regardless of the starting point. Talent is fine, but true learning requires individuals to empty their mental cup and embrace the principles behind any technique they learn. They must master the art of self-motivation and constantly relate foreign ideas to their everyday lives. The passions and energies a student may have for a hobby must be redirected towards any difficult subject they must learn. These are the guiding principles that I impart to my clients. This way they learn how to learn.
I seek to empower my clients with the ability to reflect on their own personal talents and reshape those energies towards understanding something that seems foreign and intimidating. This hopefully will enable my client to thrive independently. By boosting their confidence and strengthening their willpower, students will confront their weaknesses. They learn to create their own inner light when times are dark. Today's students intuitively understand technology and social networking. I show students how to use these skills to become better researchers and creators of their own academic support groups.
Test taking has dominated the academic landscape. I teach students how to "condition" themselves for tests, similar to how professional athletes train for an event.
Most importantly, I teach my clients not just the techniques used to solve problems but the principles that guide everything.
Ultimately, math and science are merely attempts to understand the world around us. In a sense they are like languages. Well, consider me your interpreter. I will not only explain these "languages" but I will help you learn how to speak them in your own voice.
