I have tutored adult ESL students since 2006 in various settings, including nonprofit organizations. My passion for helping immigrants improve their language skills was further developed in graduate school, where I received a Master of Education degree.
During my tutoring sessions, I focus on goal development and keep the material relevant to the interests and needs of the student. I also possess knowledge of memory techniques to accelerate learning. Most of all, I have a positive attitude and believe that everyone can learn.
I have worked with adults from different backgrounds and ages in a community based literacy program for three years. My focus has been to teach adults the basics of computer literacy which include becoming familiar with the basic functions of hardware, using software, e-mail and internet basics. I am able to teach in English or Spanish, depending on the needs of the student.
I am qualified to tutor ancient Greek. I studied Classical Greek as part of the Classics undergraduate program. I studied Attic and New Testament (Koine) Greek up to the 300 level. I tutor this subject using the teaching methods I learned through my master's program in education.
I have studied Latin since high school and majored in Classics in college. I also possess a MS. Education degree with a focus on foreign language teaching (Latin and ESOL).
During tutoring sessions, I focus on the needs of the student. If the student needs further review with grammar, I use extensive drills to help the student memorize important points of grammar. If the student needs help with vocabulary, I select problematic words and use various examples to help the student memorize it (such as building sentences, associating similar words, and studying its modern derivatives). If the student feels challenged with translations, I assess the current level and select appropriate material to help build confidence.
I have studied Spanish in formal and informal settings. I grew up in a Spanish speaking household where I learned conversational Spanish. I continued taking Spanish classes in high school through college, successfully passing the AP Spanish Language and Literature exams. Furthermore, my Spanish proficiency has been tested as part of my interpreter certification program as of 4/2013.
