I am a certified elementary teacher who worked with first graders for Chicago Public Schools for four years before deciding to be a stay-at-home mom. I have a master's degree in elementary education from DePaul University. Before obtaining a full time teaching position, I was a substitute teacher for the Chicago Public Schools and have experience working with children as young as preschool, to eighth grade. I even taught Spanish to preschoolers. I have experience in Everyday Math, Foss Curriculum, Math and Reading Extended Response, Harcourt, McGraw Hill, and Lucy Caulkins Writers Workshop. While in college as an undergraduate student, I was a tutor for Chicago Public Schools for two years.
I love working with children, and I miss teaching! I will happily tutor your child in any area he or she needs! I have many, many resources, books, and fun activities to make learning fun and exciting for your child. I am most comfortable tutoring children ages 4 to 10, but will consider older grades as well.
I am happy to meet you at your home, or at a quiet place like a library for tutoring sessions. I usually take a few sessions to assess the student's needs/strengths/weaknesses through a combination of formal and informal methods. I love to have contact via email with the classroom teacher whenever possible. This helps me understand what a child is learning at school, and she or he may be able to provide me with helpful insight into how I can improve skills. After I see where the child needs support, I base my lessons around those skills he or she is lacking. Every child is different- so I develop my lessons to fit their needs and learning style.
