I'm a strong believer in comprehensive learning, as opposed to teaching someone how to pass a test. One method that I find useful is to have a student explain a lesson in his own words, because one of the best ways to learn something is to explain it to someone else. Unexpected questions and relations come up this way, which I believe are essential for learning.

To me, the relationships and connections between subjects are as important, if not more so, as the material itself. All of this is part of the effort to make the material relevant to the student in some way, and, therefore, memorable and useful.

Piano

I have been playing piano for over 25 years. My performance experience includes recitals, musicals, and a stint at a piano bar here in Chicago. My most recent job was as the pianist for "Me Too, I Am Catherine Deneuve" at Trap Door Theatre, which has more dates coming up this year and in 2012.

Drums

I have played percussion for 24 years. During the course of my ten years of private lessons, I studied solo snare drum, drum set rhythms for jazz, rock, funk, and soloing, as well as keyboard percussion including vibes, marimba, and xylophone. I have performed at state competitions in Ohio, and in a range of musicals as a member of the pit orchestra.

Art History

I minored in Art History at Ohio State University. My studies covered a range of cultures, including Asian Buddhist art, European Art since the late sixteenth century, and American art. My work in the theatre has also exposed me to many strains of art, particularly in 20th century Europe.
