About Anna

Hello!

As a middle school and intermediate teacher, it is my job to make sure that my students are career and college ready. I have developed tools and strategies that students can use in and out of any classroom.

A little about my education:
I graduated in May 2009 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and a concentration in History. I have my Master's in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a middle school and ESL endorsement.

I have worked with children of all ages in various capacities over the past 8 years. Most recently, I taught a second grade summer school class. During that summer, the students learned how to write letters, worked on vocabulary and reading skills, conducted many science experiments, and even brushed up on the math they learned in first grade. I have also tutored struggling students in various grades to increase their understanding of grade level material.

My main goal when tutoring/teaching is to make learning fun. Activities and games that help students to understand material are my forte. All of the activities will cater to the student's learning style. Some students learn better by memorizing and reading; others like to see things visually though graphic organizers, diagrams, and 3-D images. I will try to meet your student's learning needs. I like to joke around and get to know the students I tutor. However, when it is time to work, I mean business.

I will not under any circumstance do a student's work. I will give every student the tools and support that is needed to complete an assignment, but the work turned in will be the student's own thoughts.

If a student needs help studying for a test, we will work on strategies to help a student study. Some things that might be included are: flashcards, note-taking, reviewing things not understood, jeopardy-like games, quizzing students on material, etc. These activities will help student's learn how to study on their own.

By providing opportunities for student success through fun activities and games, providing scaffolding for students to complete assignments, and giving students important tools for studying, your student should be able to succeed both within and out of the classroom. I promise to give 100% to your student.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor students at the k-6th level because I have a type 03, k-9 teaching certificate. I have learned and practiced the latest techniques and theories about student learning in all subjects at the elementary level. Since beginning graduate school I have taken courses in literature, the arts, and social studies. I am currently taking courses in elementary math, reading and writing, and general elementary education courses.
Not only do I have the education, but I also have the experience as well. For the past 8 years, I have worked with children 5-12 in various capacities either as a tutor, summer school teacher, camp counselor, or mentor. I have worked with students from all different backgrounds with varying academic needs and successes. All of these experiences have helped me to build a toolbox full of ideas to encourage and help create success in all students. When tutoring with your young student, I will cater your students need using the tools I have already learned as well as creating fresh ideas and activities that will provide success to your student.

Phonics

As a first grade teacher, I teach phonics on a daily basis. I believe that integrating phonics instruction with language arts teaching is imperative to keep phonics relevant to student learning. As a tutor, I use games, worksheets, and word studies to help students develop phonemic awareness and increase their fluency.
