I've worked as a full-time, professional tutor for the last ten years.

In the wide field of test prep, my areas of specialty include GRE, ACT, SAT I, SAT Subject Tests (literature and U.S. history), AP tests (literature, language, U.S. history, European history, and government), and TOEFL. I have helped approximately two thousand students improve their scores on all of these tests.

Despite my liberal arts background, I am equally adept at tutoring algebra, algebra II, geometry, and advanced forms of arithmetic. Many of my students consist of adults who need to relearn complicated math to apply to graduate school in the liberal arts or sciences.

Furthermore, I regularly help international executives with their adjustment to American life, providing a strong emphasis on grammar, idioms, and business English. I've also worked as an ESL instructor.

As a writer, I've published twelve books, one of which recently reached #1 in the Amazon Kindle store for a day and a half. This year, the Princeton Review hired me to write and edit an AP European History test prep book for global distribution. To other writers, I provide various editorial services ranging from light proofreading to heavy developmental work. During the autumn, I also help anywhere from twenty to thirty high school students with college application essays.

My personal philosophy on tutors: We must tread the fine line between friend and authority. While many may find this murkiness uncomfortable, it's the perfect place for my particular skills: equal parts personality and intellect. Though it's a cliche, I really do make learning fun.

Before entering the world of education, I worked in the film industry as a professional script reader, in high-tech as a sales writer, and in journalism at The Washington Post.

I was awarded a four-year full-tuition scholarship to The Catholic University of America, where I earned an M.A. in rhetoric and composition and a B.A. in literature in four and a half years. I graduated magna cum laude and was designated a University Scholar for my excellence in the honors program.

I also spent a year studying history and literature at the unbelievably historic and dreamy Oxford University, England. Since all of my "classes" were private tutorials with professors, I can honestly say that I've been on both sides of the tutoring fence.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

At a recent Christmas party, a quick headcount told me that five of my 25 guests had been laid off or fired in the preceding few months — a 20 percent unemployment rate. Heads bowed, uncomfortably quiet, all were despondent about the job market. It got me thinking back to the circumstances that led to my career as a private tutor. I’d been unemployed once too, back in 2003, after mercifully... read more

Highly Effective Teacher — My son asked me to write this review. He said Jason is the best teacher he's had in AP Euro. Jason's mastery of the subject is evident in how well he teaches it. My son only had a few sessions with him and yet he was very sad when he learned Jason's leaving. He refused to work with anyone else. It's very hard to find a tutor who knows his subject inside and out and teaches it so well. His photo ...
