In May 2006 I earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Biomedical Engineering. There I became proficient in engineering and mathematical applications and was a TA for a computer graphing course. After college I was employed at a biomedical software engineering company where I was a liaison between medical professionals and computer engineers and became proficient in computer sciences.
I'm currently working towards a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL. My courses of study have a heavy focus on clinical and biological applications and allow for flexibility in scheduling tutoring sessions. When I'm not in class, I swim, play tennis and the oboe, teach First Aid/CPR certification courses for the American Red Cross, and for the past 6 years I have volunteered as an EMT.
My educational background lends itself to tutoring not only in the biological and medical sciences, but mathematics, engineering, and computer graphics. I have had a variety of formal and informal teaching opportunities in the past ranging from young band members and high school biology students to adults enrolled in Red Cross courses and training hospital staff to use newly installed healthcare software. Because of my varied experiences, I am skilled at adapting my methods to best meet the needs of the learner. I teach by asking the student prompting questions so the student can practice the thought processes that lead them to determining correct answers on their own. This increases the success rate on examinations and enhances the critical thinking skills necessary in the 'real world'. I also provide practical real-life examples that relate the material to familiar situations and allow the learner to see the relevance in the topic.
As a freshmen in high school, I wanted to participate in a varsity sport and intended on being on a swimmer. However, my school didn't have a swim team so I decided to learn tennis. Initially I played doubles, but soon I became competitive enough to play singles. During the summers I was in high school, I assisted my tennis coach as an instructor for a tennis camp.
After high school, I continued on and played tennis for my college, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, a division 3 school. During the four season with the team, I played both singles and doubles at every match. By my senior year, I was named captain of the Women's varsity team and the number 1 singles player. As the oldest member of the team, other girls looked to me as their leader and my coaches expected me to lead practices and team warm-ups.
Although, I no longer play competitively, I am always looking for opportunities to practice, keep up my skills, and play a friendly match. I would love the opportunity to pass along my knowledge and experience on to you.
Fantastic Tutor! — Rachel was asked to come in to help my son Drew with his AP Bio class. I had never worked with tutors before and was not sure what to expect, but knew what I was hoping the sessions would accomplish. Rachel was more than we expected. She is a very smart, sweet gal who not only obviously knows the material well, but can communicate it effectively. She has a gift that allows her to communicate th ...
