I am an art teacher of 10 years, who is good at writing and math, as well as yoga. I have taught yoga for two years and continue to practice on my own. I am down to earth, patient, and encouraging. If you're having a hard time with one of these subjects, I will give you my best to help you! We will break down what you need to learn into step by step plans, and I think you can succeed!

Here is what I use to get you to succeed:

1 Break down your areas of difficulties into smaller learning projects.

2 Use the following techniques to succeed with those smaller learning projects: 1. Recalling information using pictures, or a string of words that are easy to remember because you remember their first letters, such as Roy G. Biv, which is the color spectrum, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet; 2. use repetition of material to capture the information in your mind; 3. take notes on the main ideas and sub ideas in a reading passage or a science chapter or similar large amount of information; 4. visualize yourself succeeding at every step in the process; 5. pretest yourself with me before your real tests; 6. use test taking strategies to help you not waste time on a test; 7. rest, relax, get a good nights' sleep .

I believe every child can succeed! And then keep the success strategies so your days of learning difficulties become a thing of the past!

ACT English

I received a score of 100% in grammar, a 98% in reading, and a 90% in writing on the Illinois Basic Skills test for teachers. While I worked as an art teacher, I wrote and obtained over $80,000 in grants to obtain art supplies, which meant that I researched, drafted, edited and submitted those grants entirely on my own. Before becoming a teacher, I worked my way through college as a legal secretary, which involves constant proofreading for correct spelling, grammar and formatting of long legal briefs. Even though the attorneys were the author, the secretary's job involves being responsible for the written document, and the attorneys I worked for praised me for being a good proofreader. I received a score of 23 in English on the high school ACT test. I read a great deal on my own and enjoy it. I am a good writer and reader and can help people in their language skills as this is a strong area for me.

ACT Math

My own ACT math score was 27, and math always came easily to me. I am an encouraging teacher, and I teach not just the subject matter, but ways to remember how to tackle problems with schoolwork--e.g., using pictures or strings of words to recall information (E.G.B.D.F, Roy G. Biv), how to break down large problems into small components and work on one component until you've mastered it and then proceed to the next; how to use repetition to help yourself master information; how to picture yourself succeeding before you actually do, and so on. I am patient, and believe in the power of positive thinking and strategies for success as mentioned above to master a difficult subject.

Although I had an easy time with reading, writing, math, etc., in school, I had to work very hard to comprehend the steps involved in glassblowing, had to repeat the basic classes until I got all the steps, but you should see the beautiful things I made once I finally got the hang of it; so I know from firsthand experience how it feels to struggle with learning and I have all the patience in the world, and all the success strategies that worked for me and will work for others.

ACT Reading

I have been a voracious reader since childhood. I received a score of 98% in reading on the Illinois Basic Skills test. I continue to read constantly every day, and greatly enjoy it. In my job as an art teacher in the public schools, it was part of my job to teach reading in the mornings every day when I worked at the elementary level, and when I worked at the high school level, we had to teach reading two out of three days during art, because the students in Chicago were in need of this extra help. I also was trained in how to get the main ideas, the details, the conclusions and the opinions in a written article, because the kids needed help in doing that so they could do well on the standardized tests, so I can teach that "get the info" style of reading comprehension, as well as what I always did in school, jotting down quick notes and using those notes to sum up a written article. I have patience and believe that anyone can learn these skills. I myself was a slow learner in some subjects, mainly science, so my patience with students comes from knowing what it feels like to want to learn something!

I have a BFA from the Art Institute, and my work has been sold at art fairs, galleries and gift shops. I can teach how to draw any 3-d object, including a face, a landscape, a still life, the figure, using paper and pencil, charcoal, oil pastels, chalk pastels, or watercolors. I will show you how to capture the outline of the objects, get the lights and darks, how to create a good composition for your subject, and how to correct common mistakes.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a type 03 Illinois teacher's certificate and have taught at the elementary level for 7 years. I taught reading for the first hours every morning as part of my basic teacher duties, and am very good at teaching writing and elementary math to kids. From an afterschool program, I have direct experience in teaching kids to digest, comprehend and retain science information by writing out summaries of the information needed to pass exams, and I can do the same for social studies, reading, etc. I obtained a score of 98% in reading, and 100% in grammar on the Illinois Basic Skills test for teachers, a 100% on the math, and had a composite score of 25 on the ACT. I tested in the 97th percentile on the SAT in Verbal, and in the 87th percentile in math. I am a voracious reader myself, and an excellent writer.

I received a score of 30 on my Merit Scholars test (96th percentile) in word usage. I also received a score of 630 on the SAT verbal, which was a 97th percentile score that year. I am a voracious reader, which helps me to increase my vocabulary constantly. I also know French, so I can decipher some Spanish words and understand words that are similar to words I know in French and Spanish. I enjoy reading so words are a pleasure to me!

There are two components to writing well. The first component is learning how to organize the thoughts that go into your writing piece: quickly write out your basic ideas, then organize those ideas by topic, then write out complete sentence using the topic ideas, then organize those sentences into paragraphs. The second component is grammar, spelling and proofreading and revising, to create a well-crafted, polished piece of writing that communicates all your ideas easily to the reader.

I have a yoga teacher's certification from the Temple of Kriya Yoga here in Chicago, and have taught yoga to children at Byrd Academy and Field Elementary in Chicago. I also taught yoga to adults for two years at Truman City Colleges. I practice yoga every day for a half an hour. I love doing yoga and love how good it feels!
