My name is Allyssa and I am a special education teacher. I have the attitude, education, and experience necessary to help my students succeed. I believe that the most important quality for a tutor is to be a good listener. Often, students have most of the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed. My role as a tutor is to find the piece that is missing or misunderstood. Sometimes, this piece is a basic skill that needs work. Sometimes, this piece is a small bit of knowledge. Sometimes, this piece is simply the confidence to keep going. I will find this missing piece and help my students build on what they already know.
My education includes a BA in elementary education and graduate work in special education. After completing my elementary education degree, I returned to Governors State University to for graduate coursework in special education. I have completed the coursework necessary for an endorsement, which qualifies me to teach my own class of students with special needs.
My professional experiences include my current position as a special education teacher. I work with middle school children who have a variety of disabilities. I also have four years of experience as an instructional aide, working with students with special needs. As an instructional aide, I have worked with students from kindergarten through fourth grade. I have also worked as a private tutor with students aged 6 through adult. These tutoring sessions have included the following topics: math, reading, writing, homework help, study skills, and test preparation. All of these experiences have provided me with opportunities to work with students individually or in small groups. I am accustomed to considering the learning style, attention span, skill level, and specific knowledge of each of my students while teaching.
I will be patient and supportive as we work together. The most rewarding part of any teaching job is seeing new confidence in my students. I can't wait to help you achieve new levels of success!
