"A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops." - Henry Brooks Adams
My undergraduate studies resulted in my receiving my Bachelor Degree in Secondary Education English (with a Type 9 Certification and a Middle School Language Arts endorsement) from DePaul University. As my 8 years of teaching began to unfold, I continued my education (via graduate coursework) and attained the following: Type 3 Elementary Certification, Type 29 Transitional Bilingual Certification (focused in Greek), and a Middle School Mathematics endorsement on my Type 9.
I have also taught in various settings: private and public schools, tutoring centers, career & technical facilities, secondary institutions as well as elementary settings. Having my teaching experience range from grades K-12, I realized that my passion for teaching does not entail solely a particular grade level or subject, but the actual concept of being driven to help any student reach their fullest potential overall.
In just 8 years, I have utilized some of my transferable skills, such as being dedicated, open-minded, organized, flexible, intuitive, determined, creative, and patient to help me satisfy the challenges that presented themselves from teaching professionally at so many different settings and grade levels. The benefit of such a background is that I truly know where students come from academically (and developmentally), and where they need to excel to. I understand what is required of students to begin to formulate their very first word in Kindergarten, as well as what is required of secondary students to develop their very first resume, as they tackle their job seeking journey.
In today's society, there are a lot of challenges and distractions that hinder the learning progress. I, too, was a struggling ESL student, with test anxiety, and terribly intimidated by Math. It wasn't until I was guided and coached by the right educators, for my particular learning style that I realized that I, too, can do well. I do NOT have a problem. I am NOT lacking in the intelligence department. I just learn differently, and that is okay. Because I understand that every student learns at a different pace and by using different teaching styles, I am certain that your child (or you!) can progress in their/your studies, so as to find their/your confidence, and spark for learning, once again.
For those of you that are about to embark on the exciting journey of learning Greek...BRAVO! I am very excited to hear about such drives and interests. It fascinates me, and makes me so proud, to see that people care about their roots, and wish to keep the language alive. I have worked with elementary students all the way up to retired adults in the foreign language department. I will not lie that it requires time, dedication, passion, and hard work. But if you want to achieve your goal and learn Greek, you can do it! My passion, and love for my country and our fruitful language, will not allow you to not excel. If you put in the effort that is required, together we will reach your fluency goal. I will make sure of it.
