The student must come first with focus on their interests, strengths, and future goals being most important in driving how learning about a subject is approached. In my personal quest to better communicate with others I have studied English and plant biology. I've successfully tutored math at the college level while working on my AAS of Architecture and in my previous work history have more than 5 years of computer training experience. I also have completed a bachelor of science with a major in mathematics and a minor in English writing from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, and I have recently completed a master of science from the Northwestern University & Chicago Botanic Garden's Plant Biology & Conservation graduate program.

Math: Math can be challenging to learn, but it can also be a lot of fun. My goal is to help students discover ways to learn and understand math that work best for them. Math is beautiful and ultimately every branch of math is connected which means for one problem there can be many approaches.

English: I firmly believe that the best way to improve writing is to focus on what is working and then to consider how the message of the author can be improved. The rules of writing can be used to strengthen and support the author's message. Some writers are good at presenting a meaningful message while others are good at artfully formatting their piece; while excellent writers do both. I have and continue to read extensively and through my education and writers groups have participated in many literary criticisms and writing workshops.

Biology: Biology is all about processes, and the amazing thing about these processes is they're all connected. Through MS I have learned many laboratory techniques as well as how to put together lab reports, hypotheses, and plan field studies & experiments. I also am familiar with major ideas of ecology and biology. My research primarily focused on soil ecology and photosynthesis in relationship to the success of a population of plants.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have a BS in Math and a MS in Biology from Northwestern University.

Algebra 2

During my bachelor's degree I took upper level algebra courses, and I have tutored algebra to college, high school, and middle school students.

Architecture

I have an associates degree of applied science in architectural technology. I have completed 2 years of study towards a BA in architecture. I have done freelance work drafting plans for residential work.

Biostatistics

I have a MS in Plant Biology and a BS in Math. My MS was a thesis based project that required statistical analysis of biological data from both field and lab work. For this thesis I used standard statistical techniques used in biology (such as linear regressions, ANOVA, MANOVA, diversity indices, NMDS, and richness calculations), and I developed my own models to represent the interaction of an organism within its niche. My calculations included analysis at the following levels: individual, population, and species. I analyzed chemical composition of tissues, environmental parameters, population history, respiration / physiological responses, and used data to generate a predictive model.

Botany

I am currently an MS student in the joint program "Plant Biology & Conservation" at Northwestern University & The Chicago Botanic Garden. I have worked with interns both in the lab and in the field. My research focuses on the population success of a local terrestrial orchid in relationship to soil ecology and photosynthetic capacity. I have also graded for an intro to plant biology class at Northwestern.

Logic

During my BSGS program I took "Foundations of Higher Mathematics." This course included an introduction to fundamental mathematical ideas - such as: logical arguments, sets, functions, equivalence relations, and cardinal numbers - and basic techniques of writing proofs. Also I took 6 upper-level proof based math courses prior to graduating.

Prealgebra

I have a BS from Northwestern University in math.
