As an Adjunct Professor with the City Colleges of Chicago teaching physical sciences and Astronomy (DePaul, MS 2013 with thesis in astrophysics) I am well qualified to help your student reach their goals.

Unlocking abilities, and teaching to the needs of students, is what tutoring and teaching are all about. If you hire me I will bring my experience as a Adjunct professor, and previously as a graduate student tutoring undergrads to your home. To paraphrase Richard P. Feynman, a Nobel prize winning physicist: there is no one best way to teach physics that will work for every single student. Teaching this subject by following its historical development will work for some, teaching physics as if it were a consequence of mathematical logic will work for others. Others still will benefit from a Socratic method. All I can do is try to unlock the abilities that a student already has. All I can do is guide them towards the correct way of thinking about physics. I learned that my mission is to teach these students how to think like a physicist about problems. These are skills which will serve them in anything else they study.

I am an Adjunct Professor of Physical sciences at the City Colleges of Chicago. I teach Astronomy and Physics. I have a Masters of Science in Physics from DePaul University. My BS is from Northern Illinois University.

Astronomy is the study of heavenly bodies by careful observation and the application of physical principles to their motions and nature.

My MS thesis at DePaul was in the subject of high mass star formation.

Calculus

I have a Masters of Science in Physics from DePaul University. My BS is from Northern Illinois University, where I will be returning to study for a PhD in physics.

In my education as a physics graduate student, I had to learn how to apply calculus to physics. Since then I have used calculus on an every day basis. Basic calculus, which a undergraduate student, or high school student would learn is the basis for everything else I do.

Differential Equations

I am an Adjunct Professor of Physical sciences at the City Colleges of Chicago. I teach Astronomy and Physics. I have a Masters of Science in Physics from DePaul University. My BS is from Northern Illinois University.

Differential equations is the study of rates of change, a logical extension of calculus. In Calculus one learns how to take derivatives and integrals of functions. Differential equations involve some combination of derivatives and sometimes integrals. The aim of solving differential equations is to find the function which satisfies the equation.

For example: y'(x) = 1/x ==> y(x) = Ln(x)

I have great experience with this subject as it is used in my scientific work. I am a physicist, and Newton invented this.

Elementary Math

Elementary mathematics is the basis of all future mathematical knowledge. From counting to understanding fractions and division tables I can help your elementary school student.

Elementary Science

Elementary school science is more than just a rote recitation of basic facts. I believe that from the very beginning of a childs education, science has to be taught like the art it is. Science is a structured but creative systematic inquiry into the workings of nature.

The basic scientific method consist of identifying a quesiton. Formulating a testable hypothesis, a statement of how and why something happens. Next we test the hypothesis via an experiment. Then based on the results of the experiment the hypothesis is either improved on or discarded. An improved hypothesis is then tested via experiment. A hypothesis which survives many experiments, and predicts the results of future experiments is called a theory.

General Computer

General computer literacy is the foundation of all more advanced knowledge in computers. I have been using computers since I was four. This gives me an intiutive knowledge of computers and computing which I would gladly pass on to you.

Geometry

Geometry is one of my favorite area's of mathematics. In point of fact the study of what is known as differential geometry (a combination of calculus with geometry) is used in my scientific work. I can certainly help your student in high school or college with all manner of geometric problems.

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is the study of abstract vector spaces. The equations of which are of the form.

Ax=y where A is a nxn matrix x is a vector and y is a vector.

My expertise in this subject stems from my education in physics. Linear algebra arises in problems where the math involves more than one variable. Linear algebra arises in Quantum mechanics. Indeed, the most fundamental equations of physics are matrix equations.

It is this practical and applied knowledge of linear algebra that I bring to the tutoring table.

Linux

I have been a avid user of Linux since 1997. In that time I have accumulated much knowledge of how Linux works. I also know a bit about debugging code and compiling programs.

Logic

Boolean logic is used in the formulation of proofs and the evaluation of logical propositions. This is used often in theoretical physics.

Mathematica

I have been formally taught how to solve problems in physics and mathematics using mathematica. I also have used this program in my day to day physics research.

MATLAB

I have been formally taught how to write programs in Matlab throughout college, and have used it extensively in my graduate research .

Microsoft Excel

Excel is one of the oldest and most widely used spreadsheet programs ever. It can be used for all manner of analysis and planning. Complex problems and large sets of data can be organized using excel.

With my guidance a student would learn how to do all of the above and more.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft power point is a program used for preparing presentations. In my time as a graduate student I have given many power point presentations in my time.

I would tutor a student in both how to create a presentation using the program and how to deliver it effectively.

Microsoft Windows

Microsoft windows 3.1 through Windows 8 are my area of expertise. I've used all of them. Windows is the most widely used operating system in the world. To use a PC one almost certainly has to use and understand Windows.

With my guidance a student will learn the usage of recent versions of Windows which they are likely to encounter. Everything from how to start to how to adjust the computers settings.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is the most popular word processing program with WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing of documents. I have been using this program for productive educational use since 1995. As a tutor I will provide patient instruction in the fundamentals of word processing with this program.

Physical Science

Physics is the oldest and most fundamental of all the natural sciences. It is more than just a collection of equations to be memorized but a comprehensive philosophy of mathematical principles applied to nature.

I will teach a student how to approach physics problems and solve them in a careful systematic way. They will learn the philosophy of physics. They will learn the why of the equations not just what they are. Armed with this knowledge there will not be a physics problem they cannot solve.

Furthermore, knowing how to solve problems in physics disciplines the mind to solve problems spanning natural science, engineering, logistics, etc.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is the study of measurement of angles and distances, literally the measurement of triangles.

I have great experience with this as I use it in my work on astronomy.

UNIX

I used Linux since 1997 and MacOSX since its introduction. Both of those are the most common distributions of UNIX or UNIX like OS. I did also use SUN Solaris when it was freely available for the PC as well.

I am intimately familiar with the Unix command line, BASH. I am familiar with GCC and software compilation. I am familiar with every aspect of using, installing, and maintaining unix like operating systems. In fact when I do scientific work I prefer to do it in Linux or OSX because UNIX is the operating system of work.
