I am a former family doctor, who on the side has always liked to teach. Teaching patients is a large part of primary care, as I sought to increase patients' understanding and motivation. It was also important in truly informing them of their options so they could make an intelligent decision in treatment plan.
I taught three of my four daughters algebra at home so they could enter high school math a year ahead. They all performed in the >90% range in the New York State algebra regents exam. I have also tutored neighbors, both high school age and middle age adults, in math and physics. Before moving here to Bartlett, IL, I taught anatomy and physiology in a health professions career school, where many of the students had their GED or high school diploma. I learned patience and an appreciation for different learning styles from those students. In particular, I became acquainted with the concept of learning styles, sometimes called VARK (Visual/Auditory/Reading/Kinesthetic).
My favorite way to teach is one on one and responding to questions. I strive to present the material in different ways in order that the student can truly understand rather than just memorizing methods.
I am committed to continuing to learn new things throughout life. I have just enrolled myself in a new program as a student.
