Learning a new subject or skill can be very stressful, however, if you are willing to partner with a tutor, you can master anything. I love English and am skilled at teaching this language. In addition, I can teach anyone how to construct essays and formal reports (MPA/APA format).

I have a Master's Degree in Community Counseling and worked as a secretary, grant-writer and case manager. Teaching English as a second language is a serious task. I use pictures, sign-language, audio files to help students speak, read and write. Preparing for a standardized test, such as the TOEFL can be very challenging; however, I am familiar with this exam and there is no reason to let the TOEFL stand in the way of continuing your education.

My rate is negotiable and I am proud of the ratings received by past clients. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My interest in writing began years ago when working as a secretary at Northwestern University's Cancer Center. I was recruited to write portions of a grant which funded research throughout the Lurie Cancer Center. After entering page after page of narratives and statistical data, my proof-reading skills became stellar. When I enrolled in DePaul University's School of Education, measuring nursing home residents' satisfaction required the completion of a full thesis. I am proud to say that my research was completed and I graduated with a Master's Degree in Counseling. Today, I love to tutor others in reading, writing and speaking English.

ESL/ESOL

There are many methods used to teach English. I use the Laubach Method - this uses pictures and physical gestures to teach words and phrases. Some students tell me they wish to speak without an accent; therefore, intonation is emphasized. Others simply wish to learn the basics as well as common phrases. For these students, lessons include idioms.

Sewing

I have been sewing pillows, purses, blankets/quilts and drapes for the past 7 years. Recently, I was taught how to hem pants and replace zippers by a tailor in Naperville, IL. I have two school aged children who are just learning! I started my son working the power pedal when he was a toddler. My 8 year old stitches pillows - for her, I work the pedal very slow. Learning to thread the machine is the first step and is easily mastered by drawing a diagram - soon, you will toss it aside!
