ADD/ADHD
I have worked with many students who have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. I plan my lessons to be hands-on and engaging to help students be able to focus and learn even when there are attention challenges.
Elementary (K-6th)
I have taught in a public elementary school for 27 years. Fifteen of these years were in a regular education classroom where I taught all subjects including math, reading, phonics, writing, science, social studies, and health. I majored in elementary education in both undergraduate and graduate school where I took many methods courses in elementary education.
Phonics
I am currently a reading teacher and have a strong background in phonemic awareness and phonics. I taught first grade for 15 years, teaching phonics and reading, and have been teaching reading for 12 years. I work with the most at-risk students, teaching reading, which includes phonics, decoding, reading strategies, fluency, and comprehension. I have had training in the nationally known phonics program 95% group and am familiar with the Imagine It! phonics program.
Proofreading
I proofread papers for English, Composition, and Writing Classes. I have proofread and edited papers for 2 college students this past school year.
Reading
I have been in education for 28 years. My first 15 years were spent in a first grade classroom, teaching students to read and write. I then became a reading teacher, and currently work with at-risk students in grades K-5, with decoding, fluency, and comprehension. I have my reading certification from the state of IL and have been trained in the nationally known Reading Recovery program. I was also a district Literacy Coach for 8 years, with three of those years serving as a coach with the national Reading First initiative. In the coach position, I worked with teachers to improve their classroom instruction in reading, and I also provided professional development on reading to classroom teachers. Some of the specific skill areas in which I have been trained include DIBELS, Reading Recovery, 95% group phonemic awareness and phonics, Debbie Diller small group reading instruction, and Michael Heggerty phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and writing.
Study Skills
For the past 13 years, I have worked with students in grades K-5 who needed additional help in reading and writing. We focused on decoding, word study, fluency, and comprehension - including skills and strategies to help with remembering and comprehending our reading, especially in the content areas of science and social studies. This included study skills and notetaking. Some of the strategies I have taught include the use of sticky notes, highlighting, previewing, read, cover, retell, thinkmarks, and many more. I have served as a Literacy Coach providing professional development for teachers, and have also taught and tutored through 2 nationally known tutoring companies. In addition, I also have worked with my own three sons, one of which had ADHD, throughout their high school years to help improve their reading fluency and study skills. I also have experience in helping students develop study plans/calendars, and study areas at home.
