I really believe in the power of being multidimensional and exploring new avenues of learning. With that mindset, I've engaged in domestic and international teaching/tutoring experiences that have helped to shape my perspective on education as a whole, including stints in Thailand and Costa Rica, along with student teaching in Chicago Public Schools.
I maintain an educational philosophy that gives credence to the idea that creativity and enthusiasm are crucial in helping a student to not only understand curriculum, but also to enjoy the learning process itself. I use teaching methods that involve linking subject matter to modern-day examples of everyday life, thus making things relevant to the student. Ultimately, learning should be fun and I always try to invoke some humor and laughter into the lesson at hand, when applicable. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I played on both junior varsity and varsity basketball teams when I attended high school. I still enjoy playing the game and try to stay active in the sport when the opportunity presents itself. I definitely know the sport well enough to be able to teach it to someone who seeks to learn.
I learned to play chess during my middle school years. Although I no longer play it at the pace and consistency as I once did before, I still manage to get a game or two in every other week or so. I've taught the game to a few individuals in the past and I believe I'm well versed in chess strategy/vernacular in order to competently teach it a prospective learner.
I have a TEFL teaching certificate from Thailand and have years of tutoring/volunteering experience, both domestic and international, in helping students learn to read, write, and speak English competently.
Alongside this, my educational background in both History & Secondary Education has allowed me to become proficient in reading, writing, editing, researching, analyzing, and public speaking.
I completed a TEFL certification course at the TEFL Corporation in Phuket, Thailand. This course involved 120+ hours of rigorous study and 9+ hours of observed in-class teaching. In addition, I also volunteered as an English tutor for adults through Read To Learn in Palatine. I feel I have the necessary background and foundation with which to tutor an aspiring English language learner.
