I have been teaching and tutoring math for 15 years. I have taught math classes including Prealgebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, Multivariate and Advanced Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra. I have tutored and taught SAT, ACT, GRE, GED math preparation. I also train math teams for competition.
I believe that all students can learn, and that it is the responsibility of the teacher to present the material in a manner which will optimize student learning. I analyze the student's learning style, ability, interests, and talents in order to individualize instruction to best fit each student's needs. I use pretests to determine student skills, and I strive to never bore students by teaching them what they already know. I take full advantage of lesson time.
It is important to consider student motivation as practice is crucial to success. I listen to student feedback, incorporate student choice, and adjust my lessons as needed. I use technology, games, and hands-on learning to help students connect with the material.
I have had great success with my students improving their ACT and SAT math scores even achieving a perfect score. I have worked with middle school students who have tested into Calculus or beyond as freshmen. I have a good track record with students scoring 5 on the AP Calculus exam. I have trained math teams which have ranked highly at the state level and individuals who have competed nationally.
I have a B.S. in Mathematics, a Masters in Math Education, a Masters Level Certificate in Gifted, and have Illinois Certification for teaching math 6-12. I have four years experience teaching math at the college level and 8 years experience teaching math at middle and high school level. I have been teaching and tutoring for 15 years.
I also have years of experience tutoring and teaching online. Online tutoring is available via email, Skype, or chatroom. It can include answering questions and checking work. It may also include providing resources, explanations, or videos. Lower rates are available for online tutoring. This can be an inexpensive way to support your learning while you study!
Homeschool group or private lessons available for pre-algebra - calculus students. Please contact me for more information.
I love math and teaching.

Alison's subjects
Algebra 1
I have taught and tutored Algebra I for 8 years. I have worked with both students who struggle with the subject and those who excel. I compact material, as appropriate, to accelerate learning. By focusing on applications and problem solving I help students to see why Algebra is important. I use online tools to provide practice and assessment as students progress through the course.
Algebra 2
I have taught and tutored Algebra II for 8 years. I individualize instruction to meet students learning style, ability level, and interests. I accelerate learning by compacting curriculum. I use online tools to provide practice and assessment as students progress through the course.
Calculus
I taught calculus at the university as an undergraduate for 4 years. I have also taught AP calculus as well as fun exploratory classes in calculus. I have tutored calculus for many years.
Geometry
I have taught and tutored Geometry for 8 years. I really love geometry and focused on geometry during my B.S. in math. I have had success both in teaching students how to write proofs and how to solve problems. I also focus on the different study methods which help students to be successful at these two disparate skills.
Prealgebra
I have taught and tutored Prealgebra for 8 years. I have worked with both students who struggle with the subject and those who excel. I compact material, as appropriate, to accelerate learning. By focusing on applications and problem solving I help students to see why prealgebra is both important and useful. I use online tools to provide practice and assessment as students progress through the course.
Trigonometry
Trigonometry is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. Many teachers make trigonometry much harder than necessary. They ask students to memorize many formulas without providing the concepts behind the ideas. Through mnemonics and conceptual understanding I work to make trigonometry not only an easier subject to learn, but one which you will not forget.
SAT Math
I have tutored SAT math for 10 years. Students I have worked with have improved their scores and even achieved a perfect score.
GRE
I really enjoy the material on the GRE in the Math and Analytic reasoning sections. When I took the test I received a perfect score on the math and 780 out of 800 on the analytic reasoning section.
When helping students prepare for standardized tests I ask them to first take a pre-assessment to analyze their strengths and weaknesses. Then I tailor their lessons to use their strengths to address their weaknesses. I have found that this quickly improves performance.
GED
I have worked with students through a number of organizations to help them pass the GED. I have had a great success rate. I ask students to complete practice tests to analyze their strengths and weaknesses. By using their strengths and focusing on weaknesses I find scores quickly improve.
ACT Math
I have tutored ACT math for 10 years. Students I have worked with have improved their scores and even achieved a perfect score.
Discrete Math
Discrete math was a part of my Bachelors in Mathematics. I also have significant amounts of coursework in computer science including optimization of algorithms, and in mathematics including logic, set theory, combinatorics, number theory, and graph theory. The focus of my undergraduate work was geometry and topology. I have taught statistics and probability, algebra and geometry. While discrete math courses vary greatly my background encompasses the topics included in this course.
Differential Equations
I taught differential equations at the university level for two years. I really enjoy helping students with this material and seeing the patterns which help to identify the methods to use to approach each type of problem.
ISEE
I have worked as a teacher at an independent school for the past 8 years. One of my most important responsibilities is preparing students for placement exams. Many of the students I work with take the ISEE. As a result I have come to know this exam very well. I have great success with my students getting accepted to some of the most prestigious independent schools. I also work with students preparing them for their placement exams.
Praxis
I took the PRAXIS in 2005. I received a score of 281 out of a possible 300. In math I received a perfect 300. The passing score is a 240.
On the PRAXIS II - Math content exam I received a score of 183 out of a possible 200. This score qualified me for the ETS recognition of excellence.
