Hello! My name is Cally Tubbs, and I am currently a 9th Grade English Teacher. I currently work at North High School in Bakersfield, CA, but am moving back home to the Chicago area. Right now I am working with Regular and General level classes to improve their reading comprehension, fluency, writing, and mechanics. I like to do various exercises in my classroom to help the students learn in fun, interactive ways. I always cater my teaching to meet the learning style of my students, and have to change lessons from class to class to accommodate for the various learning styles.
Some lessons that I currently do with my students are grammar baseball, which consists of editing sentences to score runs, passages from text paired with comprehension questions, quick writes, and scavenger hunts for context clues and literary devices in books. I also like to use technology in my classroom. I often times allow my student to use my iPad in class for various educational games and exercises.
Besides teaching in a classroom setting I currently tutor students before school on writing. Right now we are working on taking support from a text and using it in a literary response paper. We have also worked on writing narratives, persuasive papers, and research papers. I also tutor after school almost every day to students who need extra help on the current assignment we are working on, or even just reading comprehension. I have also tutored a group of six students to help them pass their High School Exit Exam. These were students that had taken the test multiple times and failed. I was given six weeks to help them with vocabulary, reading comprehension, and written response.
I love working one- on- one with students and believe that anyone can benefit from tutoring. I am open to working with individuals or small groups. If there are any questions please feel free to call me.
