As a graduate of the University of Oregon Journalism & Communication School, I was trained in the art of being able to write and communicate in all kinds of situations. After graduation, I worked briefly in the magazine world, then moved on to a 5-year stint as a technical writer (writing user-friendly help guides and training manuals for software and hardware products, as well as some marketing copy writing and web design thrown in for fun). For the last 10 years, however, I have found that what I enjoy most is tutoring and mentoring students who are studying English as a Second Language. I have taught people from Russia, Ukraine, Korea, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Pakistan and all over Latin America. I have taught children as young as 5 years old, all the way up to adults who wanted to improve their English skills. I spent the summer of 2004 tutoring in Seoul, South Korea, and have lived in Germany and Switzerland for a total of 6 years, so I am also fluent in German and well versed in modern German and Swiss culture. One of my favorite experiences in ESL tutoring was teaching an 8-year-old Korean girl how to read in English for the very first time. The smile of pride on her face when she read "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" to her mother, and her mother's tears of joy will stay with me forever. What I love most is being able to help students discover new ways to express themselves and accomplish their goals.
