My name is Rachel. I have an associate's degree in mathematics. Math probably came easier to me, compared to some subjects, because my father is an accountant and I know how to play the piano. By having a father who is an accountant and knowing how to play the piano has really helped me in math. While in college, I worked in the math lab for couple years helping other college students with math. When I worked with the students, individually or in a group, I would find out the where they are level wise and help them build on the knowledge they already had. I also watched the students reaction to see if they understood or if I was needing to go another route to help them to understand the math problem. By doing so, I was able to learn different ways to explain the same math problem several different ways. I also try to find out how they learn the best, if they learn by me showing them how to do it or if I need to verbally explain how to solve the math problem. By doing all of these different things, it helped me to become a better tutor and helped me to know what to do with different students. It is a rewarding feeling for me to see others understand what they were being taught.
