Hello, students (and parents)! My name is Alex, and I want you ... to understand school! You deserve to get the most out of your education, and I'm here to help you do that.

For the past year, I have been a tutor at a learning center, where I specialized as a math tutor, but also tutored in the sciences (physical and social) and the occasional history/English lesson. My specialty is Math--up to multivariate calculus and elementary linear algebra/differential equations--and the sciences--most prominently, economics, physics, and psychology.

I am currently attending BYU Provo, with major in Economics and a minor in Mathematics. I hope to hear from you, and more importantly--I hope to help you.

Algebra 1

American History

I received a 5 in AP U.S. History, and feel confident in helping anyone understand complicated concepts in any American History course, from Kindergarten to college.

Biology

As an AP Bio student, I took and passed the Exam in May (we won't know scores till Sunday). I feel confident in explaining complicated concepts in a clear manner to help you succeed as well.

Calculus

As an AP Calculus BC student last year, I scored a 5 on the exam in May. I can explain complicated concepts in a simple and understandable manner (all the way up to multivariate calculus and basic differential equations). I also worked as a Math Tutor in Texas.

Chemistry

I self-studied the AP Chemistry Exam (with no teacher or formal instruction) and received at least a 4 (scores don't come out till Sunday). I feel confident in explaining complicated concepts in a simple manner.

Vocabulary

As an avid reader, my vocabulary has grown to the point where I am confident in explaining and teaching the rules and techniques to build a similar one.

Grammar

I feel confident in explaining the principles of grammar in a simple and clear manner. I received 5's on both AP English exams, and I can help even the most confused student understand and apply these principles.

Microsoft Excel

As a little bit of a computer geek, I am fluent not only in programming, but also in the basics of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. As an Econ major, I have to be very familiar with the finer applications of Excel, including formulas, sums, and charts/tables/graphs. I feel confident in helping others learn these intricacies as well.

European History

European History can be challenging, but I feel confident in helping students achieve mastery of the subject in a clear, simple, and even interesting manner.

Geometry

As a Math Tutor, I know how to teach geometry principles in a simple and understandable way.

Microsoft Word

As a novelist, I am familiar with the intricacies of Word, including the Track Changes and Macro tools and features that allow for group editing and large-scale projects. By understanding these tools, Word will become more than just a word processor--it will become an art medium.

Physics

Without a teacher or formal instruction, I self-studied the AP Physics C: Mechanics Exam and got a 4. I feel confident in helping you achieve likewise. (I can also do E&M, although I might have to brush up on it a little).

I received a near perfect score of 780 on the Reading Comprehension section of the SAT, and can apply those same skills to elementary reading needs.

Music Theory

As a piano student and teacher, I am confident in not only the principles of music theory, but also the teaching and application of them.

Trigonometry

Writing

As an aspiring screenwriter, I have spent years honing my writing skills. I have attended writing conferences and worked with literary agents in an attempt to edit and publish a novel I've written.

Statistics

As a Math tutor, I feel confident in explaining even the most complicated concepts in a clear and understandable manner. I have tutored students in basic statistics, AP stats, and even all the way up to applied statistics. As a freshman at BYU this year, I will be taking Statistics for Economists.

Geography

I received a 5 on the AP Human Geography exam as a high school sophomore, a course that examined not only the where of geography, but also the why. Thus, I feel confident in explaining any aspects of geography in a clear and simple manner.

Java

Without formal instruction or a teacher, I self-studied the AP Computer Science A exam, and got a 5. I am fluent in the basics of Java, and can explain the principles in a clear and simple manner.

English

As a high school student, I received 5's on both AP English exams, and feel confident in helping any other struggling English student succeed, whether in grammar, literary analysis, or essay writing.

Government & Politics

I scored a 5 on the AP U.S. Government and Politics Exam, and as a debater, I am well versed in the governments of many other countries around the world (and I am always willing to learn more). I can explain concepts in not only a simple manner, but also a relevant and even interesting one.

Psychology

As an AP Psych student, I received a 5 on the Exam. I feel confident in explaining concepts in a clear and understandable manner, all the way up to college psych classes.

Anatomy

As an AP Biology student, I am fluent in the anatomy of both the human body and other animal and plant body structures. I received a 4 on the AP test, and fee equipped to help you achieve the same (or even greater).

I have played the piano for 8 years now, and taught for 1.5. I can teach theory as well as the music, or only the fun stuff, depending on the student. I have competed at the State level (in Texas UIL State Solo & Ensemble).

Discrete Math

Symbolic logic and methods of proof puzzle many people--especially those for whom the method is intuitive. I recently tackled this course at BYU, and emerged triumphant. Armed with my Discrete Mathematics textbook, I can help you learn all you need to be able to prove those rules that seem intuitive, or those formulas that you need to continue on into the fields of mathematics, number theory, and topology.

Differential Equations

As an Econ major and a Math minor at BYU, I have run into almost every style and type of differential equation imaginable--and where I haven't, I have online textbooks to help me learn them so that I can teach them to you. I can help you do more than solve the equations--I can help you learn to apply them and use them to solve even the most complex problem, and to understand the universe.

Video Production

As a film/television major at BYU, I am familiar with both the mechanics and theory of film and video production. With this rounded education, I can best convey the beauty of film as an art and the methods to creating it.

Photography

I fancy myself to be a fairly decent photographer, and while no one can teach creativity, I am willing and able to teach the parts of a camera, the rules of composition, and the proper methods for developing a photo (film) or editing one (digital). I have taken photography classes in both film and digital mediums, and received awards for my work in both areas. I advanced to the State level of the Texas PTA Reflections competition in photography twice.

Public Speaking

In high school debate, my partner and I qualified for NFL Nationals twice, and TFA State three times (in LD, PF, FX, and DX each time). This year at NFL (in PF), my partner and I advanced to the top 60 debaters (out of 400). I am able to help with writing cases, basic argumentation, or just plain public speaking.

Computer Science

In high school, I self-studied (without any formal instruction or teachers) the AP Computer Science A exam, and got a 5. I am fluent in Java (and am learning C++), and still have my resources (AP Practice book and online textbook) I can use as a guide in case I encounter anything with which I am unfamiliar.

Econometrics

As an Econ major at BYU, I am familiar with the subject of econometrics, and all its intricacies. Armed with several online textbooks, I can help you puzzle out the models by which we understand the business cycle and society. I can make the topic not only clear and understandable, but also interesting, and even fun (don't make that face.)

Linear Algebra

As a math minor at BYU, this was the first class (concurrent with Discrete Mathematics) that I took. I am fluent in the idea of matrices, eigenvalues, and linear mappings, as well as applying it to MATLAB and calculus. In addition, I have my textbook to catch up on things I may have overlooked in order to best help the student.

Logic

Having taken Discrete Mathematics as a freshman, I am fluent in the principles of symbolic logic. I can teach it as a separate course, or in conjunction with discrete mathematics and mathematical proof. In addition, I can take the bare principles of logic and apply them to things such as essay writing, test preparation, or debate/argumentation. With the tools of logic at your command, you will be a master at all the subjects in school.

MATLAB

Having taken Linear Algebra as a freshman, I am familiar with the MATLAB program, and have my textbook to cover those things I may have skipped or missed. I can help students understand how to apply this brilliant computer program to linear mappings and transformations, and make linear algebra about more than just applying equations--I can make it about describing the universe and life itself.

Organic Chemistry

As both an AP Biology and AP Chemistry student, I became very well acquainted with organic chemistry structures and applications. I received a 4 on both of these exams, and am willing and able to teach the basic principles of organic chemistry in a concise and clear manner. I also have textbooks with practice questions to help ensure mastery.

Film

As a film major at BYU, I am exposed not only to the mechanics of film production, but also the theory and even the philosophy behind it. I know both how to make a good film and why it is a good one. With this kind of rounded education, I am able to best convey the beauty of film.

Classics

My high school and college studies have well prepared me to tutor in classics. During high school, I was not only in the Latin/Greek class and extracurricular club, but I also took a comprehensive philosophy course which outlined the expansion of ideas and thought systems up to the late twentieth century. In addition, I still have my Classics textbook from BYU, and thus have a resource to brush up with in the instance that I encounter something with which I am unfamiliar.
