Hello, Fantastic Student! I'm here to help you read, write, and communicate more effectively and critically. I break my lessons down into small, understandable steps and also help you to see the larger picture. I vary my strategies for teaching depending on your needs and learning style whether that be through explaining, modeling, using examples, repetition, quizzing, and/or application. My approach is a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic whenever possible.

Writing is a process, and it’s important to lead students to build upon basic skills that are the foundation for constructing effective sentences, paragraphs, and essays while simultaneously promote critical thinking and writing by asking probing questions to elicit alternative lines of thinking, supporting details, and additional evidence. I think it's important to mention that I am not interested in altogether changing your writing style and squelching creativity. My purpose is to harness your personal writing style in a way that meets your instructor's expectations and objectives while still incorporating your individual flair and tone.

I have taught at the college level for over 14 years, and nothing brings me more pleasure than helping my students reach those "a-ha!" moments. I also have experience teaching students whose first language is not English.

I would love to help you achieve small or long-term goals as it relates to improving your writing and communication skills. Allow me the opportunity to help you today! I have a flexible schedule and will work with yours. Thanks and hope to see you soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have taught at the college/university-level for over 15 years teaching composition (English 101 and English 102). I have my master's degree from the University of Idaho in English.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught conversational English to second language speakers whose native language is Spanish, Mandarin, and Chinese.

Proofreading

I worked as an editor for the United States Bureau of Reclamation, proofreading Standard Operating Procedures. I also served as the faculty advisor for about 5 years for the student newspaper The Western Voice at Arizona Western College, where I proofread news, reviews, and feature stories.

Spanish

I earned my minor at the University of Idaho in Spanish. I have taken additional Spanish conversation courses since then to maintain fluency. I also lived in Yuma, Arizona, a city that borders Mexico, and worked for Arizona Western College there, which is a Hispanic-serving institution. Most of my students were Hispanic, and thus, I was able to communicate with my students in English and in Spanish when necessary.

TOEFL

I work for Educational Testing Services and have worked for a year evaluating students' submissions in TOEFLibt Writing (independent and integrated) exams.
