Thank you for considering me as a future tutor for you or your son/daughter. I know that education is important to you, and you would like your son/daughter to succeed in school and beyond, or would like to succeed yourself. I'm here to help.

When I was a kid, my aunt instilled in me a curiosity to learn and a sense of "wonder" about the world. I have taken that same curiosity into my own studies, teaching, and tutoring.

Teaching:
I taught for 8+ years at the college level at schools in Michigan and Illinois. I worked with ESL students, adult students, 18-22 year old college students, and also tutored. I taught over 50 writing classes, lectured on subjects as varied as Greek culture and drama, Enlightenment and Romantic literature, Frankenstein, television and movies, and postmodern literature. I also developed and taught a class on JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis.

Writing/Editing:
In addition to teaching, I have also had opportunities to edit documents and publications for companies like the Bank of Japan, Johnson and Johnson, and I've helped students prepare entrance essays to MIT and Brown University. I was a freelance journalist for the Springfield Business Journal in Springfield, Illinois, and helped write curriculum and tests for Pearson Education. These real life experiences have helped make my teaching/tutoring more effective.

Tutoring:
I have tutored students in algebra, geometry, chemistry, English, writing, ACT/SAT prep, and history. I love using word pictures and many of my tutoring students have said I help them visualize a math problem or compare a chemistry problem to something else they might do in life (like cooking). With writing, I help students get organized, help them produce ideas that are clear and concise, and help them learn to communicate strong images and use an active voice.

Personal:
I love reading, working out, spending time with my family, learning computer software and spoken languages, traveling, and cooking. While life has taken me on many adventures, I have taken a love for learning and a sense of wonder wherever I have been.

Again, thank you for your consideration as we look to partner in your son's, daughter's, or your own learning adventure.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have loved the game of chess for a number of years. I have played in a number of tournaments (USCF and non-USCF tournaments) and teach beginning to intermediate chess. I teach the basics of chess play, opening King pawn and Queen pawn moves, and also middle game strategy. I am also available for group tutoring.

Chess is great for teaching logic, problem solving, and memorization.

Study Skills

In addition to teaching students in English, math, science, and ACT prep, I have worked with students on developing good study skills by managing their time, setting priorities and goals (and rewards), eliminating distractions, and staying accountable. I work with students to develop a planner, journal, and break assignments into smaller pieces. I also incorporated different learning style techniques to help them meet their goals.

Very detail oriented! — I have had my son with many different tutors including Huntington learning center on and off for the common core math. My son has struggled and has never quite really "got it" enough to have a decent grade in class until I recently had Cliff start tutoring my son. In just about 4 lessons my son was able to understand the math and recently ended up with a high B in math and a 88 on his recent Eoc! ...
