Thank you for considering me as a future tutor for you or your son/daughter. I know that education is important to you, and you would like your son/daughter to succeed in school and beyond, or would like to succeed yourself. I'm here to help.
When I was a kid, my aunt instilled in me a curiosity to learn and a sense of "wonder" about the world. I have taken that same curiosity into my own studies, teaching, and tutoring.
I taught for 8+ years at the college level at schools in Michigan and Illinois. I worked with ESL
students, adult students, 18-22 year old college students, and also tutored. I taught over 50 writing
classes, lectured on subjects as varied as Greek
culture and drama, Enlightenment and Romantic literature
, Frankenstein, television and movies, and postmodern literature. I also developed and taught a class on JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis.
In addition to teaching, I have also had opportunities to edit documents and publications for companies like the Bank of Japan, Johnson and Johnson, and I've helped students prepare entrance essays to MIT and Brown University. I was a freelance journalist for the Springfield Business
Journal in Springfield, Illinois, and helped write curriculum and tests for Pearson Education. These real life experiences have helped make my teaching/tutoring more effective.
I have tutored students in algebra
, writing, ACT
, and history
. I love using word pictures and many of my tutoring students have said I help them visualize a math
problem or compare a chemistry problem to something else they might do in life (like cooking
). With writing, I help students get organized, help them produce ideas that are clear and concise, and help them learn to communicate strong images and use an active voice.
I love reading
, working out, spending time with my family, learning computer
software and spoken languages, traveling, and cooking. While life has taken me on many adventures, I have taken a love for learning and a sense of wonder wherever I have been.
Again, thank you for your consideration as we look to partner in your son's, daughter's, or your own learning adventure.
