If you aren't good at factoring, using the quadratic equation would get you the same result.

This does not work with subtraction. Only with addition and muplication.

Example:

2-1 does not equal 1-2

When you have x^a/x^b, the rule is x^a-b. If you are referring to rational exponents, then you are actually talking about using the radical rules. For example x^1/2 is actually the squareroot of x.
