I currently work at Mercy Hospital as a counselor. I also teach Academic English at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in their new English Language Program for international students.

Previously, I did my undergraduate work in Speech Language Pathology and Spanish. For four years, I taught English as a Foreign Language and volunteered to tutor non-native English speakers at the Presentation Lantern Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

I love languages, especially Spanish. After living in a Mexican neighborhood in Chicago, IL for one year, studying abroad in Oviedo, Spain for five months, working in Madrid, Spain for two years, and studying translation in Madrid for six months, I have reached a high level of competency in Spanish.

Due to my training in Speech Pathology, I also love to work with foreign language speakers' pronunciation in English.

From all of this experience, I would be able to tutor someone who wants to improve their English or Spanish in terms of grammar, pronunciation, conversation, reading, and comprehension.

My teaching style is very interactive, since using the language correctly is the primary goal. We can choose a book to guide our time together or identify areas of improvement to guide each meeting. I can be flexible with what your learning goals are. I am available in the afternoons starting at 3:30 Monday through Friday.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I started to teach English as a Foreign Language in Chicago, IL, where I gave classes to women from Mexico for one year. Then, I went to Northampton, MA to get a certificate in TESOL, which was a month-intensive course, offered by the School for International Training. Directly out of that program, I taught a couple of pronunciation courses at the University of Massachusetts, in their Continuing Education Department. My class was full of students from Mexico, Japan, Russia, Finland, Romania, and Brazil, who wanted to improve their pronunciation. Given that my undergraduate training is in Speech Language Pathology, pronunciation work with non-native English speakers is my specialty.

After an academic year at U of MA (2004-2005), I moved to Madrid, Spain, where I taught Business English to professionals in their work place. I worked for Beacon Language Consultants in Madrid for two years. Now that I am a graduate student at the University of WI, studying community counseling, I am not able to teach ESL full-time, but I do tutor at the Presentation Lantern Center in Dubuque, IA on a weekly basis.
