My undergraduate degree is in music education, both instrumental and vocal, and I am certified to teach kindergarten through twelfth grade. Earning a masters degree in flute performance and a doctorate in music theory with a minor in musicology, I am qualified to teach any musical subject desirable! I specialize in flute, piano, voice, theory, and composition lessons - but I am ready and able to teach other subjects as required.

My true heart lies in bringing music to those who need it for healing their spirits and bodies - I have extensive experience teaching music to those with special needs and immense knowledge on the topic of how music is used for healing (especially traumatic brain injuries). My knowledge in the field of special education includes writing IEP goals, utilizing music to meet physical and occupational therapy goals, teaching children and adults voice inflection using music, and teaching fine and gross motor skills through musical activities.

Lastly, my native languages include English and American Sign Language. I can teach you the structure of each language for a comparison/contrast or we can simply converse. We can even sign songs if you're looking for something more poetic.

Composition (Music)

My PhD is in music theory and musicology with a heavy emphasis on composition. Having studied composition throughout three music degree programs, I feel I am uniquely qualified to teach composition, as I also have a background in performance, theory, and musicology. I have 18 years of teaching experience in this subject and prior success teaching students composition for various purposes.

Ear Training

My PhD is in music theory and musicology; a large part of the field of music theory is aural skills, or ear training. In addition to the training I received during my doctorate degree, I also learned ear training skills throughout 5 years of my undergraduate degree in music education, and 2 years of a masters in music performance.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold certification to teach vocal music and all instrumental courses, grades K–12. I have taught elementary band for 3 years in the New York public school system, and have taught for 5 years in a specialized setting for children with special needs—those students were ages 5–21. Prior to that experience, I had 6 years of private teaching experience, primarily with elementary aged students just beginning their musical journeys.

Music History

My PhD is in music theory and musicology (i.e. music history). As I have studied all musical periods in depth, I feel I am qualified to tutor this subject at all levels, including the doctoral level.

Piano

Having 18 years of piano teaching experience, I feel I am a qualified teacher of this subject. I have taken private lessons myself in this area, and have passed all required piano exams for a bachelor of music education. Five of the 18 years of experience I have had teaching include teaching in the New York public schools—where piano instruction was part of the curriculum.

Sight Singing

I have taken sight singing courses throughout all of my college degrees, but the focus on sight reading and aural skills during my PhD provided me with skills utilized in twentieth century music, serial music, and chromaticism. In total, I have 18 years of teaching sight singing teaching experience as well as extensive experience teaching sight singing to choruses throughout the United States.

ESL/ESOL

Coming from a Deaf household, English is my second language (American Sign Language is my first language). Understanding the structure of any language you are trying to learn is the first task; learning the vocabulary is second. Saxophone

I have 18 years of private instruction, including teaching the saxophone. I am capable of teaching all members of the saxophone family and offer a unique perspective into learning this instrument as I also have performance and music theory/musicology degrees.

Flute

I hold a master of music performance in flute from Ithaca College, in Ithaca, New York. In addition to performance skills, I also have a bachelor of music education degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where I learned flute pedagogy techniques. My knowledge of canonical literature is current, and I feel I can offer students an integrated approach to music including music theory, performance, and music history skills.

Clarinet

Instrumental music education, certified K–12. I am a woodwinds specialist, and have 18 years of teaching experience teaching the clarinet.

Drums

I am certified to teach all instrumental music, K–12. I have been successfully teaching drumming/mallet instruments for 18 years and have enjoyed every minute!

Oboe

I have taught oboe lessons for 18 years, and have a degree in music education (instrumental and vocal), certifying me to teach this subject in the public schools, grades K–12.

Sign Language

My primary language is American Sign Language, as I grew up with a deaf parent, sibling, and multiple deaf relatives. I am fluent in this language and culture, and work to educate others in these two things as well.

Hard Of Hearing

I am a Child of a Deaf Adult (CODA), utilizing American Sign Language (ASL) as my first language and English as my second language. I have also utilized Signing Exact English (SEE) in the past, but find ASL to be more effective for me personally (though I would not object to teaching this subject to others if requested).
