I graduated high school in 2007, and during my junior year I started tutoring math. Math tutoring seemed to be most effective by working through problems.

After high school, I attended Grand Valley State University studying Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry. At this time, I held private tutoring sessions for math and science classes. During my junior year, I was a teacher assistant for a physiology lab.

Upon graduating from my undergraduate, I taught organic chemistry at Grand Valley State University for two semesters while I waited to start graduate school. I am currently attending Palmer College of Chiropractic.

Algebra 1

Math is best understood by learning the concept, practice, and apply it to practical questions.
Algebra 1 is essential to understand in order to succeed in Algebra 2. There are several tricks to making learning algebra easy. If you would like help on this subject, let me know.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 uses many concepts and skills from Algebra 1. If you are having problems, I would suggest first reviewing Algebra 1 and making sure you have conquered the course.

If you are still having problems, I would recommend getting help. Ask your instructor/tutor to present the material in a different way! There’s almost always more than one way to solve a math problem.

Biology

Biology is a basic science which demands a lot from students. There are many concepts that require conquering and facts to memorize. Find tricks including mnemonics and stories to help you memorize the facts. Vocabulary

Having a good vocabulary will definitely help your student feel more confident, but developing an understanding for words will help them throughout life. Many words have central roots behind them, learn the roots, and a 30 syllable word may be broken down to determine its meaning.

Grammar

Grammar is one topic most people dread. This is probable because proper grammar conflicts with everyone’s natural dialect. The best way to learn is to open up a grammar book, learn the rules, and practice. Usually, there are practice questions in the grammar book. You may also find the internet useful as well. Search through random websites to see if you can catch any errors (most websites are not peer reviewed for grammar).

Geometry

Geometry is most than just lines, angles, and shapes. A good understanding of geometry will help with some aspects of Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and higher math courses. There is usually a small amount of memorization that is required, but the primary method of learning the material is practice.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry may seem tricky because there are numerous variables, lines, circles, and equations. However, it can be simplified by first learning and understanding those trigonometric identities, then working through problems and practicing. It is essential to have a solid algebra background in order to succeed here because there will be equation manipulations that is required in order to solve a problem.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is a fascinating topic. Many instructors will focus in on a subject too specifically or dive into a topic without giving hints on how to learn it, which tends to scare students. Anatomy

Anatomy is not just memorization. Most people will end up taking a physiology course which requires a good background in anatomy. Use mnemonics and funny stories to help you learn the material, and if you have the chance, learn the roots from which the name comes from. The roots may give away the region and name of the structure making it easy to learn the material.

Spelling

Spelling can be tricky at times. Luckily for most of today's society, computer spell checks are available. However, schools will still expect you to know how to spell without one. My biggest advice is to first learn as many tricks as you can (example: I before E except after C). Then, it's a matter of practicing. Get a piece of paper out and write the word several times until you have it down. Finally, get quizzed. Have a friend or family member quiz you.

ACT Math

The ACT Math could be the most comprehensive part of the ACT, requiring you use what you've learned since middle school. Knowing this, the best way to prepare is practice. Keep in mind that there will be questions which require you to combine concepts of different courses in order to get the correct answer.

ACT Science

The ACT's can be stressful, and everyone knows that a good score can get help get you get in the school you want.
