Hi! I am an energetic and enthusiastic tutor. I work with students from 10-18 years old, and I work with adults. I attended Drake University as an undergraduate student and majored in psychology and minored in history. Then I earned a master´s degree in educational psychology from Florida State University. After that I earned a master´s degree in school counseling from Loyola University Chicago. This past year I graduated from Northeastern Illinois Chicago with a master´s degree in teaching English as a second language. I have a lot of experience working with children of all ages, and I have experience working with students with disabilities such as ADHD/ADD, autism, and Aspergers syndrome. This past year I worked as a history/social studies and English as a second language teacher at a private school in San Jose, Costa Rica. While teaching in Costa Rica I also tutored students after school and over the summer. I feel confident tutoring in the following subjects: biology, social studies, history, psychology, English as a second language, SAT, and ACT.

As a tutor, I develop a close personal relationship with my students and I focus on helping them master the subject matter so that they will improve their grades or test scores. I help students set challenging but realistic goals using goal setting theory, which is a performance enhancement tool I learned while studying educational psychology at Florida State University. Goal setting when applied correctly enhances motivation and focus. I make learning fun by using a lot of variety during sessions and incorporating learning games. In addition, to the subject I teach I also can work with students on time management and study skills. My primary concern is keeping my students happy, and making sure they accomplish their goals. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a master´s degree in school counseling. As part of my degree I did a year long internship in a high school. Part of that time I worked with students with ADD/ADHD and other disabilities. I also spent a year and a half workign with students with disabilities at an organization called Jewish Child and Family Services in Chicago.

Basketball

I was a 3 year varsity player at a large high school located around Chicago. I went basketball camps all over the country as a high school student. I played two division 1 sports. I took a coaching class as an undergraduate. Most importantly I have a master´s degree in sport psychology. As graduate student I learned all about how people learn athletic skills, how to maximize practice time, how to use goal settting to increase motivation and focus, etc. I have also worked as a personal trainer.

CBEST

I just took the CBEST two weeks ago and passed with flying colors. In general, I am good at standardized tests. I can help students on the the three components of the test (reading comprehension, math, and writing) using textbooks designed to help people study for the CBEST. I can help students improve their test taking skills and writing ability. I have three master's degrees and it uniquely qualifies me to help students on an exam that measures basic academic skills.

College Counseling

I have a master's degree in education in school counseling. A school counseling degree prepared me to be a high school guidance counselor. One part of a high school guidance counselor's job is to help students apply and choose a college that is right for them.

Fitness

I played two division 1 sports. I have a master´s degree in sport psychology. I used to work as a personal trainer.

Phonics

I have a master´s degree in teaching English as a foreign language. I spent a year teaching English as a foreign language and history to grade school and high school students in Costa Rica.

Study Skills

I have a master´s degree in school counseling. I helped high school students with study skills when I completed my year long internship.

Track & Field

I ran on a Division 1 cross country and track and field team. I have a master´s degree in sport psychology.
