I possess the unique knowledge, skills and experience required to tutor students with both ADD and ADHD. During my twenty years of private tutoring, I have tutored at least two students with these conditions. I tutored a 5th grader in math, to prepare him for the CRCT. As a result of my tutoring, he obtained an extremely high score in math on the CRCT, and has continued to do remarkably well in his other classes also. I can also recall tutoring an older student in science, and she has done extremely well as a result of my tutoring. I have found that having a precise teaching routine, exercising extreme patience with the student, as well as being consistent and persistent, have proven to be successful for students with these conditions. Moreover, I have also realized that the key element in tutoring this type of student, is to ensure that the student is being tutored in a quiet and relaxed environment.
My knowledge, experience and education encompasses many areas of math, specifically the type of math knowledge required to successfully prepare students for the arithmetic reasoning and math problem-solving skills necessary to do well on the math section of the AFOQT. I was an honor student in math while in college. Additionally, I have successfully tutored many students in math for similar standardized tests such as the ASVAB, GED, SAT, ACT, PSAT, GHSGT and the SSAT. The AFOQT also evaluates the student's ability in verbal analogies. I also possess a strong English background, which allows me to enhance the student's skills in this particular area as well. My ability to simplify math problems provides significant support for students who need to sharpen their math skills and reasoning abilities. During my 20 years of tutoring, I have always emphasized both arithmetic and logical reasoning skills. My unique method of teaching makes it easier for my students to understand and solve almost any type of math problem. Moreover, I've been extremely successful in teaching my students to always utilize a step-wise approach to problem-solving. This ensures that simple math errors will be minimized and their test scores will be maximized.
My knowledge and expertise of criminal justice and the criminal justice system is based on my 33-year career as a forensic analyst, providing laboratory support for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command. I have consulted with, advised and trained federal, state and local law enforcement officers. I have also trained trial and defense lawyers, as well as providing expert courtroom testimony in numerous criminal cases.
I have taken several courses related to criminal justice/forensic analyses at the FBI Academy and have attended many seminars and workshops, presented by reknowned criminologists. I have also acquired an extensive knowledge of military and civilian laws, rules and regulations. I fully understand the policies ad procedures involved in the judicial system. Thus, I feel that I am highly qualified to tutor students in this subject area and provide them with a wealth of acquired knowledge regarding how the entire criminal justice system works.
I have a Bachelors of Arts degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Alabama State University (with honors). I have extensive experience in tutoring elementary students. I recently tutored an ADHD student who successfully passed the math section of the CRCT. I have also tutored elementary students in math and reading for the CRCT at Love T. Nolan Elementary School, College Park, GA.
Additionally, I have tutored elementary students at my church for the CRCT in math and reading. I have a unique ability to simplify math concepts so that elementary students can successfully solve math word problems. I also have been successful in teaching elementary students how to select main ideas and key words in reading passages, so that they can correctly answer questions from the reading passage.
I am uniquely-qualified to tutor students for the MCAT.
I received a B.A. degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. I have taken courses in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biochemical Preparations, Personal Health and Introduction to Research. I am also a certified tutor in Anatomy, Pharmacology, Psychology, Physiology, Biology, NCLEX, TEAS, Nursing and Study Skills.
I have 20 years of tutoring experience and have tutored students at all grade levels, college and post-graduate. I am currently tutoring a college graduate for the Dental School Entrance Exam.
My tutoring style is very methodical and highly-effective. I have been extremely successful in improving the grades and class performance of all of my past and present students. I strongly emphasize good study habits, as well as tips and techniques for performing well on standardized tests. I am very patient and thorough in my approach to preparing students for major exams.
I also possess an above-average mastery of English grammar and effective writing skills.
I have over 20 years of private tutoring experience, which includes tutoring students for numerous standardized examinations. During my college years I took courses in organic chemistry, biochemistry and psychology. I am currently a certified tutor in anatomy, biology, nursing, ADD/ADHD, psychology, study skills, several math and science courses, as well as English and writing. During my 33 years as a forensic laboratory examiner, I have been involved in many laboratory health and safety policies. I have also obtained a thorough knowledge of pharmacology, as a result of working as a forensic drug chemist/analyst for 8 years in the laboratory. I have also tutored a nursing technician (Emory University Hospital, Atlanta) and a home care nurse in preparation for the TEAS. I am a dedicated, patient, focused and highly effective tutor. I can explain technical concepts, principles and procedures in a way that makes them easy to understand.
During my 33-year forensic science career, I performed numerous clandestine drug analyses on substances classified as organic chemicals. I have also conducted numerous analyses of textile fibers which are composed of organic structures (straight-chain hydrocarbons). I also took organic chemistry in college and performed numerous lab experiments during that time period. I have also trained law enforcement agents in the basic structures of organic chemicals as they relate to clandestine drugs. I am fully knowledgeable of the basic principles, structures, reactions, etc. involved in organic chemistry.
During my 33 years as a forensic chemist, I spent my first 8 years performing drug analyses. Many of the drugs I analyzed were prescription drugs. Thus, I routinely utilized such reference books as the Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR), National Formulary, U.S. Pharmacopedia and Merck's Drug Index as aids in identifying these drugs. Many doctors and pharmacists used these same reference books in their profession. As a result, I became very knowledgeable of the different classes of prescription drugs, their actions, interactions, contraindications, dosage, as well as the mechanisms by which they perform in the human body. During my college career, I also took courses that are prerequisites to pharmacology (organic chemistry, biochemistry, quantitative and qualitative analysis, biochemical research, etc.). I fully understand why certain drugs are prescribed for certain medical conditions, based on the ingredients in these drugs. This has allowed me to be extremely knowledgeable in pharmacology and has greatly enhanced my ability to be an effective pharmacology tutor.
During my twenty years of tutoring students at all grade levels, I've developed a highly effective method of teaching students how to study and prepare for tests and exams. I initially focus on improving the student's reading comprehension skills in all subjects (math and science included), since this is the ultimate key to academic success. I teach them how to thoroughly study class notes, as well as highlight key concepts, study graphs/tables and read chapter summaries in their textbooks. I also emphasize reviewing class notes on a nightly basis. This precludes the student from having to cram on the night before the test. I've found that many students can memorize definitions and learn concepts, but cannot apply them, to correctly answer test questions. I've also observed that many students struggle with math and science problems mainly due to not developing a systematic approach to problem-solving. Therefore, I routinely incorporate all of these skills into my tutoring sessions, and they have proven to be highly successful. Finally, my approach to studying for standardized tests, is to encourage my students to take as many practice tests as possible. This is the best method of ensuring complete familiarity with test-type questions and problems, as well as learning how to correctly answer them.
