About Gina

My name is Gina and I grew up on the Gulf Coast, first in Florida, then in Mississippi. In 2000, I graduated with a BS in Special Education from the University of Southern Mississippi with minors in Child Development and Psychology. I have certification from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GPSC) in Special Education in all subjects for grades PreK-12 and in Early Childhood Education grades PreK-8.

I began teaching in 2001, working in the field of Early Intervention and Special/Deaf Education. Since then, I have worked with various age groups from birth to high school in MS, TN, and GA. I also have a wide range of experience with students in various special education settings from inclusion to resource/pull-out to self-contained, teaching various special needs such as deaf/hard-of-hearing, developmental delays, and the autism spectrum.

Having learned Sign Language in middle and high school with the help of three Deaf friends, I continued to take American Sign Language classes in college and stay connected with the Deaf Community. Recently, I decided to change my career focus to sign language interpreting and in May 2012, I graduated from the Sign Language Interpreting Program at Georgia Perimeter College. I am currently working as an educational sign language interpreter.

I truly enjoy working with students of all age and grade levels with various learning styles. I excel in teaching in small group settings or one-to-one, focusing on individual strengths and weaknesses.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Math is one of my best subjects. For the past several years, I have helped friends and family with math subjects such as geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. Quite often, it was to study for an exam or a certification test such as ACT/SAT, GED, or the Praxis/GACE.

Algebra 2

Math is one of my best subjects. For the past several years, friends and family have asked me to help them with their math assignments and studying for tests. I am currently tutoring a friend in Trigonometry. Her grades have improved from D's to A's and B's and her frustration level is much lower!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over 15 years experience of teaching in public/private schools and hold a GA teaching certificate for grade levels PreK-12th (Special Education and Early Childhood Education) in all subject areas.

In addition to working in the general elementary education setting, I have a wide range of experience with students in various classroom settings from general education to inclusion to resource/pull-out to the special education classroom . I have taught students with various special needs such as deaf/hard-of-hearing, language delays, ADD/ADHD and the autism spectrum.

Hard Of Hearing

I am fluent in Sign Language and am currently working as an educational interpreter serving students who are Deaf and hard of hearing.

Phonics

While working in the general elementary education setting, several of my students had difficulty with learning to read. Phonics-based activities is one approach that I used to assist my students in improving their areas of weakness that hindered their ability to read.

Proofreading

English grammar and composition is one of my best subjects. For the past several years, friends and family have sent me their college writing assignments, application essays, and research papers for me to proofread.
