I love reading. I hate the thought that many struggle with reading and do not enjoy it. As a child, I would read for hours to finish a book. I loved reading books we got in the mail. My dad would read the same book and we would then discuss it. We did this for many years even after I started my own family. I loved showing neighbors, cousins, and friends how to read, the sounds, and rhymes. After I graduated from Agnes Scott College, I tutored reading. Later,as a teacher, I tutored in the evenings and during summers. I then home-schooled our daughter, and now am currently tutoring. I have been tutoring home-schooled and public students, grades k-6th, for the past 4 years in reading, language arts and math. I love seeing them become more self-confident and independent.
The student and I work hard together during our session. You the parent, have chosen to do this extra service for your child. Tutoring is a give-and -take relationship and the student needs to be comfortable with me in order to learn. I expect the student to participate, be prepared, ask questions, and review our lessons. I use their school textbooks, and library books so they are familiar with the concept when they study it again in the classroom. Having taught 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades, I can tutor general subjects in those grades. I enjoy seeing my students learn and the ideas "click".
I love animals, and have had many at one time. In the past, I tutored in my home and the pets were a source of topics for papers, and reward for hard work that day. We have had numerous dogs, house-trained rabbits, guinea pigs, a chinchilla, and aquariums. We also enjoy fishing, photography and riding motorcycles.
