Hello! My name is Kelsey, and I am currently working on an engineering degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology. I was home-schooled, and I love to learn and teach! It is a great joy to be able to help a student acquire enthusiasm for learning new things. I have a year of experience in tutoring math at Georgia Southern University. I have also individually tutored students in mathematics for over a year. I am available to tutor in person or online via video chat.
My methods for tutoring are:
1.) utilizing graphs and pictures to express math concepts to students who learn visually
2.) working through problems step-by-step alongside the student
3.) discussing mathematics concepts with students who learn through auditory means
4.) asking thoughtful questions during tutoring sessions to reinforce learning
5.) teaching students to effectively utilize their textbooks to improve independent study
In addition to regular tutoring, I offer proactive, brief introduction courses to students who want to get ahead. In these courses, the student and I work through a condensed, helpful textbook to gain an understanding of the material; thus, the student is well prepared at the start of his or her class. Algebra 1 is the study of how variables change in reference to other variables and how polynomial graphs behave. Learning the formulas in an algebra course is not necessarily the most important goal. The most important ability that can be acquired from any algebra course is the skill to take the knowledge, (formulas), learned and apply them to all problems, standard or modified, more complex problems; this is the capability to look at a problem from all sides and solve it the easiest way. The most important thing to learn in algebra is to be able to write down given information, think over every possibility, and adapt to new problems.

I took Differential Equations at Georgia Southern University and earned an A. Since then, I have used Differential Equations in my System Dynamics and Controls engineering class. In this class, I gained much practice with taking Laplace transforms, taking inverse Laplace transforms, and dealing with state space variables.
Elementary math teaches students to manipulate numbers by counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. This subject also provides a brief introduction to algebra (dealing with unknown variables) and cost/profit analysis.
I took linear algebra at Georgia Southern University and earned an A. Since then, I have used linear algebra in several of my engineering classes. More specifically, I have used matrix algebra, determinant calculations, and other important linear algebra skills in my classes.
I took an introductory MATLAB course at Georgia Southern University and received an A. I just recently worked through a book entitled, "MATLAB for Beginners A Gentle Approach," by Peter I. Kattan, to refresh and reinforce my knowledge of MATLAB. I am starting another book entitled, "Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB, Second Edition," by Delores M. Etter, to learn methods of applying MATLAB syntax to realistic engineering problems. I have worked with MATLAB in a couple case study projects at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Physics is the study of the force on an object. These forces can be caused by gravity, electricity, magnetism, drag, friction, etc. How much energy an object has is also studied in physics; energy comes in different forms, such as heat energy, potential energy, and kinetic energy. While solving problems in physics, students learn about an object's position, velocity, acceleration, momentum, and many other things. Equilibrium of the forces and moments on an object is also studied. Torque and moments of inertia are studied as well. Later in physics, students also learn about electric and magnetic forces and how these forces manipulate objects. Within this field of physics, electronic circuits, magnets, and light waves/particles are studied.
This course teaches a student about reading comprehension. A student learns how to read a piece of writing, analyze it, and deduce what the author was trying to portray, describe, or argue. Reading teaches a student to discover the author's intentions.
While at East Georgia College, I was considered exempt from the Regents exam because of my SAT scores. Although I have not taken the exam specifically, I have received A's in all classes that apply to sections on the Regents exam, such as math, history, science, chemistry, and physics. Also, I have tutored math and writing for other similar standardized tests.
I took a course called "How to become a superstar student" that taught me how to study in college. I have also learned study methods that work when preparing for tests in college. I plan to use the knowledge and experience that I have gained in college to prepare kids for proactive, college studying. This will include: learning to read ahead at least one week so as to be prepared to ask questions in class when the subject is taught, comparing book notes and class notes to find similarities, making a list of questions as you are reading so as to make your reading the most productive, etc.
I have taken private tennis lessons for several years. I have played in a few tournaments, singles and doubles. I periodically play now. I have the necessary equipment for teaching and drilling, a basket of over 50 tennis balls. I have volunteered teaching kids in tennis camp.
