Dear future students and your families,
So, who am I and what can you expect?

I was born and raised in France and am the product of a French classical education...6 years of Latin and 5 of Greek...and, of course French. "So, you're going to teach ME, English?" you might ask. Good question. My mother was American and an English major. She made sure I spoke correctly (mothers will correct you) and, because I was a prolific reader, made all the English classics available to me. Grammar, you say, what about that? I would respond that both Latin and French grammar are a tremendous help in understanding and teaching English grammar. Further, without good grammar your best efforts will be wasted when you take up pen and paper to write.

I have been teaching Latin, French, and English in "classical" schools for the past fifteen years but have decided to focus on one on one opportunities rather than facing a classroom full of students where, time constraints and other responsibilities keep the teacher from being able to meet the needs of all the students.

What am I like as a teacher? I'm demanding and very thorough and want you to gain the confidence and skills necessary to overcome difficulties, get ahead in your studies, or just stay on top of your studies. But I'm also very patient and want to inculcate in you a love of learning that will last beyond your tutoring sessions.

My students think I'm pretty funny; I do think a sense of humor goes a looooong way in making learning AND teaching a lot more pleasant.

I will look forward to meeting you soon.

Wow! Thank you so much. I don't feel I really deserve the praise because my help has been, because of circumstances, so random. But I do rejoice in the 94 and have to give credit to your daughter who listens, does her best and asks excellent questions.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

Dear prospective student,

I love languages and words and hope to share that love with you through readings of beautiful or perhaps difficult passages followed by discussions so that you will become comfortable when reading on your own.

I have taught English in all its many facets, like literature, grammar and writing, for over fourteen years in classical schools and feel confident that I can be of help to you no matter your area of interest or difficulty.

I am familiar with the classical literature of the time periods ranging from Mesopotamia to the present day, including the Bible, and would enjoy delving into some of those texts with you.

ESL/ESOL

Having been brought up in France, the US, Spain and Australia, I understand the difficulties encountered when you don't know a language well, and in particular if your job requires it!

I have taught 2 groups of Ukrainians and a number of Brazilians in ESL classes sponsored by churches in the Atlanta area and feel comfortable teaching English "from scratch," or fine tuning your language skills, both verbal and written.

I am an English teacher and have taught grammar, reading comprehension, and writing as well as public speaking for many years. I would enjoy helping you overcome the hurdles found in the English language and making you more comfortable here in the USA.

French

Bonjour,

What a beautiful language French is....but difficult as well, I know. Fortunately, I was born and raised in France and attended French schools for most of my academic studies. So, yes, perhaps I am biased. But I also feel very confident that I can help you overcome those difficulties inherent in the language.

I taught French at all levels, from "fun French" in kindergarten and 1st grade, through high school for a number of years in a Classical school. I can explain and clarify the grammar, increase your vocabulary, and make you confident in your conversations, and we'll practice those tricky "rrrrrrr's" as well.

Be ready for that French social situation, that business trip or that class exam you're dreading. Or get ready to go to Paris and enjoy yourself!
A bientot.

Latin

Dear Student of Latin,

Latin is SO MUCH MORE than increasing your vocabulary, even though, of course, that is one of its tremendous benefits!

I have been teaching Latin to 3rd graders through high schoolers and have seen first hand how the studying of Latin can improve your learning skills right across the board.

Whether you are struggling with the complexities of the grammar and the hundreds of forms you have to assimilate, or whether you're on vocabulary overload, vocabulary without which your hands are tied and your brain stuck in a permanent "pause" position when you're trying to translate even a simple sentence, I can help you work through these apparently discouraging problems.

I have worked through a variety of curriculums and even created one for the beginning student, so our work can be directly linked to your particular problem areas in whatever curriculum you are currently working through.

Remember that the skills required for the learning of Latin will help you in every other subject you study.

Valete discipuli,
Be well students!
