I love to teach! I have taught K - 8 both elementary and special education. And, I've been a university professor in Georgia and Pennsylvania. My passion is reaching every child and supporting them to achieve success. I bring 30 years of experience as a teacher and national educator. I have tutored students in grades K - 9 in all subjects but LOVE reading, language arts, vocabulary, phonics, and writing. I have trained teachers all over the United States in how to teach children effectively and look forward to working with you and your child.
I understand how to look at your child's latest assessment scores to determine where we will start. If that doesn't give me enough information, I can further test to discover what the areas of strength and weakness are. I have trained teachers in the latest research-based strategies on teaching reading and am highly qualified to work with your child. My background in special education helps me to have the patience and understanding to design specialized tutoring activities that meet you child's needs.
I truly believe that all children can succeed and together we can help your child to reach new heights in their academics. I am a mom of four with one pursuing her doctorate degree. Education is my passion and I can't wait to share my expertise and love of teaching with your child.
I was an elementary teacher for 11 years - teaching K - 8 all subjects and special education. I have specialized training in reading, language arts and social studies. I hold a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education and an M.Ed. in Educational Administration. For the last seven years, I have been training elementary teachers in the most effective strategies to use in their classrooms. I believe in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students. I use on-going assessment to make sure my students are strengthening their weakest areas so that they can achieve success.
For four years I was the Assistant Director of Reading First in Ohio. I developed training and trained teachers in how to teach all areas of reading, specifically phonics. I was on the PRAXIS National Reading Specialist Committee. In that role, I helped to develop the test questions for teachers to become reading specialists. I have taught elementary grades which involved teaching phonics for 12 years. I teach at Kennesaw State Univ. and instruct my students on how to teach phonics, especially academic vocabulary.
I passed the Educational Leadership Praxis with a score of 670; 150 points higher than required in Georgia. I served on the Praxis National Reading Specialist Committee to develop the core components of the Praxis and then developed test questions for the reading specialist test.
As a national trainer, I have developed and then delivered speeches and presentations to audiences of both small (5 - 10 people) to large (100+) on topics in education. With my Master's in Educational Administration, I studied how to design and deliver workshops to audiences. I have conducted this work since 2004. I know how to connect with my audience and to recognize when I might need to alter my presentation to "recapture" their attention.
As a published writer and contributor to a teaching magazine, I understand how to write in order to capture my audience's attention, succinctly present the key points, and then summarize with a call to action. These skills are critical to effective speech writing.
I have been a teacher for over 30 years and have taught study skills in each year that I taught. I was the lead teacher for a summer camp in Ohio on study skills and test preparation. I taught 20 6 - 8 graders for three summers in this area specifically. I designed a program for 4 - 8 graders for the NAACP on leadership, careers, and study skills. When I tutor a student, I always teach study skills as that is part of the issue. Helping students get organized, learning how to read a textbook, taking notes, and studying for a test are part of my regular tutoring.
Just what we needed — I am very glad that we found Stephanie H., she is great with my fourth grade son. We have only had a few sessions but my son really likes it. When I told my son he would be starting tutoring he was not thrilled but after the first session he has become very excited about tutoring and that is definitely because of Stephanie. We are looking forward to continuing with Stephanie. ...
