ACT Reading

Besides making excellent scores on my own ACT and SAT reading sections, I have had two years of experience as a volunteer with Youth Outreach United, tutoring students in reading and reading comprehension . The majority of my time was spent helping them not only read through assigned books, but teaching them how to understand and retain what was read, in order to complete writing assignments.

Bible Studies

I am qualified in this subject because I took three years of Bible courses as part of my Christian Studies major in college. I still have 2 semesters left of college courses before I can receive my Bachelor's degree, but the majority of courses I have completed involved learning how to translate, study, interpret, and teach the Bible. Since college, I have taught Bible studies and lessons to youth at my church and am currently doing so. Most importantly, as a follower of Christ, I study the Bible personally each day, so I may grow in my faith.

English

Growing up, English was always my best subject academically as well as the one that gave me the most enjoyment. I have two years of experience tutoring students, many of those students being bilingual, and much of that time was spent helping them learn, remember, and use the rules of correct English.

Phonics

As a volunteer tutor for two years, I mostly worked with elementary age children who struggled with reading and writing skills. Phonics is the foundation for learning to read and write; thus, as I tutored the kids, I was helping them learn consonant and vowel sounds, how these sounds make words, and the different combinations and rules of these sounds. As a kindergardener, I remember taking Hooked on Phonics from my parents and how much it boosted my phonics, reading, and writing skills tremendously. I want the opportunity to help make that same improvement for students.

Proofreading

I have experience proofreading writing assignments as a volunteer tutor as well as being asked by teachers/professors on many occasions to proofread the writing assignments and papers of other students in both high school and college. I have completed three years of college as a Christian Studies major working towards my Bachelor's degree, and the majority of my required work involved the research, writing, proof reading, and editing of my own papers. I received many compliments from my professors of my writing and proof reading ability.

Reading

I have two years' experience as a volunteer tutor with Youth Outreach United. Reading/reading comprehension was the subject I spent most of my time helping the students with. I'm very patient and try to find ways to make the student feel less pressure and fear about reading by helping him see the fun and discovery of being able to read well and retain what is read.

Writing

I have three years of college experience in writing papers as a Christian Studies major. During that time, I received a 90 or above on all papers and writing assignments as well as many compliments from my professors. I assisted many of my friends and classmates in writing skills, sentence structure and syntax, and proof reading of papers. I also have two years experience as a volunteer tutor which involved helping students become more confident in their writing assignments.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
