- Mr. E
I have been writing music for over forty years and have recorded two albums (a third is in the making). My formal training at Laney College, CA has enabled me to explore different musical periods and genres while expanding my harmonic/melodic horizons. In the end, this has translated into gaining more control and flexibility to write in major, minor, modal, or mixed of both tonality and modality. Polytonality and atonality are also venues I have explored and used occasionally (as an effect primarily). For example, in one of my songs, I used an atonal piano riff during the interlude section (with crickets in the background). I compose using the piano or guitar primarily.
I am a singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist with 40 years of teaching and performing experience, two albums recorded, and an Associate's in Music from Laney College, CA. Ear training is at the core of my musical degree and career. My approach consists on making students identify, sing, and write melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material in increasing levels of difficulty. Thus, students are expected to move from intervals, chords, and quarter notes to melodic motifs, chord progressions, and rhythmic patterns. In the end, students should be able to copy entire musical pieces by ear.
I teach music history (from the Neanderthals to the 20th century), notation, ear training, harmony, rhythm, and several popular styles. The guitar is my primary instrument followed by piano. I illustrate different styles, music periods, instrumentation, and orchestration through music appreciation as well.
I have been playing and teaching guitar for over 40 years; my formal training was completed at Laney College, CA, and I have recorded two albums. My teaching method is based on 12 levels of increasing difficulty that span from basic triadic harmony in major and minor tonalities (rock, blues, country, pop, folk, etc) to complex chord structures in mixed tonalities, modalities and chromatic harmony (Jazz, Bossa, Mellow Rock, Latin Jazz, etc). Each level can be completed in about 12 weeks (1 weekly lesson and daily practice). Typically my students learn in 1 year what takes most guitar students 10 years to learn. More importantly, the joy of learning and playing is emphasized.
