I love working with all ages of students. I taught for 9 years in Maryland, and taught 22 years in the Cobb County School District. I have taught second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. I have taught all elementary and middle school subjects except for middle school math. I greatly enjoy Math, and taught accelerated Math students in fifth grade. My last position was teaching Life Science in middle school.

I am certified in Early Childhood Education, all subjects in the elementary grades, and most subjects in middle schools. I have additional certifications in Gifted Education, Reading Grades 1-12, English as a Second Language, and English grades 9-12. I have also taken many additional education trainings through Cobb County. I have worked with many ESL students, and I have tutored individual students in high school English, composition, and American and World History. I enjoy helping students prepare for CRCT tests, and I have had some experience with ACT Prep for English and Reading.

Vocabulary

Learning grammar comes naturally to some students, while others struggle with it. I have had years of training in English grammar, and I taught grammar rules and terms for many years.

I have tutored several students in this area, and have developed many strategies that may help clarify rules for those who find grammar difficult.

Reading

I have certification in the state of Georgia for Reading instruction for all grades 1-12. I spent time taking additional coursework in reading, and have over 20 years experience in Reading instruction.

I have English certification in all grades with an additional certification for grades 6-12. I have taught English skills, including grammar skiils and writing skills for many years.

I currently tutor students at all levels, and have helped many middle school and high school students with writing essays, and to prepare for standardized testing.

Literature

Literature at the middle school and high school level can be difficult for students. Students are often asked to interpret a story's plot, themes and the author's point of view. Poetry can also be difficult, because many literary terms are sophisticated and new to students.

I have worked with many students to help them understand literary terms, and to find resources to help them develop better reading and writing skills associated with literature.

Proofreading

I have many years of experience teaching English and writing skills. Some current methods of teaching writing in the early grades do not believe that students should be told when there are errors in capitali- zation, punctuation, and spelling, because creativity of expression may be compromised.

Spelling

There are many words in the English language that do not follow a pattern because our words come from many different languages. Elementary Math

I have Georgia certification for teaching math, and have had many additional math trainings from the Cobb County school system. It has always been one of my favorite subjects to teach, and I have "logged" many hours of Math tutoring as well.

Some students find Math difficult, and as a tutor, I know my job is to build Math skills as well as build a student's confidence.

Elementary Science

I am certified in Elementary and Middle School Science, and have taught Science as an elementary teacher, and also taught Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science as a middle school teacher. I served as Science Coordinator as a middle school teacher, and have a wide range of experience in science education.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught grades 2 through 6 for twenty-two years. The majority of my experience was with grades 3-5. I taught all subjects with a strong focus on Reading and Math, and also helped students learn how to do basic research as well as use educational internet sites.

I am certified for the state of Georgia for all subjects in elementary school, and have taken many additional courses through local teacher training in Reading and Math.

Phonics

I have taken many Reading education classes and I have also passed the GACE Reading test which certifies me to teach Reading for all grades (1-12).

I currently tutor elementary students who have phonics instruction as part of their program. I also have ESL certification, which required additional training in phonics instruction.

Study Skills

I spent the majority of my 30 years in the classroom teaching grades 5, 6, 7, and 8. These are the grades when students are expected to begin learning how to prepare for tests. I have had extensive training and experience with teaching notetaking, outlining, memorization techniques, and using websites to enhance understanding of material in the content areas. I taught Social Studies and Science at the middle school level - subjects that require strong study skills for success.

ESL/ESOL

I have taken the required classes to become ESL certified in the state of Georgia, and as a result, I now hold ESL certification.
