My approach is to be quick to encourage and faithful to provide explanations, practice, support, and appropriate challenges for your student. I have 9 great years of tutoring experience, but I'm still young enough for your child not to tune out my advice. I have taught approximately 100 students and have tutored over 70 students one-on-one.

I have dealt with many students who have felt that their teachers did not care about their progress, but I have always had a personal approach. That care along with dozens of practice problems without pressure has allowed me to see steady growth in the grades and even in the dispositions of my students. Confidence is a major factor in tackling math problems, so I always work on that in conjunction with the material. I'm funny and encouraging and will not make your student feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, confused, or disliked at any moment.

I helped a sweet teenage girl with low processing skills go from an F to a B in geometry within four months. I also taught an anxious senior how to tackle the ACT that he recently had done poorly on two times in a row; he got into the state university of his choice after eight sessions with me. I taught in the classroom for two years at a private school, I majored in math, and I have worked for locally and nationally known tutoring companies with children in third grade up to adults going back to college. I have experience with ADHD, autism, low processing skills, dyslexia, and an actuarial exam. I am very comfortable with each individual student. I also have a passion for English and enjoy vocabulary and writing. I have published a couple of magazine articles, and I am working on a book.

Please do not settle for a teacher with a rigid nature. Enthusiasm is contagious! I would be honored to share mine with your student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I truly enjoy making vocabulary, reading, and writing come to life for my students. I am also full of test-taking strategies and hints. Admittedly, I am proficient at explaining students' mistakes, as well. This helps them to learn a pattern for the next time that they tackle exam practice problems.

ACT Math

I have helped many students in ACT Math. I have a lot of tips and can focus on material that is different from the SAT. Usually 4-8 sessions with me will prepare your student for improvement or a great first attempt on the ACT!

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with several students that were diagnosed with ADHD. When I taught at a private school, many students relied on our abilities to provide individual learning plans with extended time and resources. I patiently and respectfully teach students with ADHD in groups and one-on-one, telling them that they can work hard to achieve their goals. This approach has proven to help their educational confidence and understanding along the way.

Algebra 1

I have taught and tutored Algebra 1 for 6 years. It's that turning point subject for many students, and many adults confess that this is where math went sour for them. I can help reverse that in your student! I have many fun tricks to help students remember details.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 can be tough, but with practice during tutoring and tricks to remember the material, your student will be just fine! I've taught this subject for 6 years, but will still make it as fun as possible for your student.

ASVAB

I can help students with the most commonly failed portion of the ASVAB: the math sections. I have been able to tutor Navy and Marine applicants and both entered with a great math score! I have lots of math tricks from Algebra to Geometry and beyond. I can make up problems on the spot for your needs.

Autism

I worked for Autism, Incorporated in South Carolina. I used ABA therapy to educate and encourage children and students with autism in their own homes. I was able to work with ages 2-15 on reading, math, science, and more.

Calculus

I tutored students for the AP Calculus exam in my years teaching. Also, I provided a crash-course for a student as he prepared for College Calculus over the summer. I had another student in Business Calculus score a 100 on his first test, earning a 96 overall in his class. I am inclined to conclude that Calculus is just plain doable!

Chemistry

I received a 4.0 in Chemistry 1 & 2, enjoying both classes greatly. I have continued to tutor these subjects, creating fun ways to memorize concepts, so that your student will be comfortable with me and with the material.

Differential Equations

After Calculus 1, 2, & 3, I passed a class on Differential Equations. I studied 1st and 2nd order ordinary differential equations, order reduction, Taylor and power series, constants of integration, and LaPlace transforms. I can help someone else who needs assistance, as I earned a 3.0+ GPA in the course!

Discrete Math

As a math Major with a Bachelors degree, I dealt in depth with many Discrete Math concepts. I became proficient in proofs with logic and set theory in my college level course on Logic. I tackled many discrete series in Calculus II and III, and in other classes I dealt with binary operations, relation and function analysis and composition, modular arithmetic, induction, and groups. Lastly, my two college-level Probability and Statistics courses and actuarial exam experience have helped me greatly grasp concepts of combinatorics and concepts modeled in Discrete Math courses.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked in reading and math with children grades 2-5 in a structured after school program. I have a lot of patience for little ones and love to be enthusiastic for their good behavior and achievements. I am good at thinking of letter and number games on the spot to keep them having fun while learning and laughing. I believe in the use of manipulatives to keep their hands occupied while expanding their education.

Fitness

I have been a runner for 12 years. Since then, I have not only undertaken 19 marathons-or-longer, but I have also learned a thing or two about healthy eating from my father, a Certified Nutrition Specialist, author, dentist, and Health Science Professor. I have been through the intense fitness and strength program, P90X, multiple times, and completed mountain bike races, and a triathlon event including kayaking. I have directed races and am currently working one-on-one with five women on their various levels of fitness and speed.

Geometry

Proofs. Properties. Triangles... and more! Let me help! I have taught and tutored this course for a few years. It is an area of math all its own, and it can be a struggle for even an algebra whiz.

Logic

I am extremely comfortable with Logic, truth tables, proofs, etc. I took the course in college, receiving an A. I expanded my knowledge of the proofs and their symbols in upper level courses like Abstract Algebra, Complex Analysis, and Real Analysis. From then, I have utilized many of its concepts in tutoring Geometry with proofs.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is a turning point in school. I can help by providing confidence and fun one-on-one tutoring for your child.

Precalculus

Algebra 3, Math Analysis, Trigonometry, Vectors, Limits, and more can be found in this course. It was my privilege to teach this subject at a private school for two years. I can make up problems on the spot to assist with review or forward motion in this course. I have a lot of funny acronyms and tricks for Precalculus. I really can help!

SAT Math

A few sessions with me will be all you need to score well on the Math section of the SAT. You could boost your score 100-200 points if you are like my previous and successful students! I have tutored remedial students as well as borderline geniuses for this test and can tackle any practice problem that they need with concept knowledge, applicable shortcuts, and stress-relieving humor.

SOL

I have tutored students for the 5th grade SOL, Algebra SOL, and Precalculus SOL. In addition to this, I have stayed up to date on its format and subject material, such as the inclusion of z-scores and standard deviation on the test. Also, I easily passed all of my SOLs back when I was in school in Southwestern Virginia.

Statistics

I have taken multiple college-level Stats courses. I have been able to apply that knowledge while tutoring high schoolers and college students. Also having been involved in a six-month study program for actuarial statistics exams; I can provide great math tricks and funny study tips.

Study Skills

As a math tutor for years, I have often been asked to conduct reviews for history, science, English, foreign language, and test preparation upon finishing a homework help session. Formerly a straight A high school student, I have comfortably become reacquainted with a variety of subjects through self study. I have taught and tutored approximately 150 students, many of whom needed help getting organized with their workload. I have happily been able to prioritize and study with them in a concise, efficient manner using lists, matching, true/false, and open-ended questions about their subject material.

Track & Field

My background in running includes 9 seasons of personal athletic experience and team captaining in high school, 2 college credits in Running, and scores of race experiences from under 3 miles to over 30. I coached a private school's Cross Country team and have trained numerous runners one-on-one for various distances and terrains. I learned about mechanics and form from working at a specialty shoe shop. And I have even directed multiple races of my own. Special, low rates apply to people seeking my coaching in running!

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is tricky to say and even harder to do! I can help your student with trig functions, graphs, triangles, identities and more as they prepare for college or Calculus. This is a subject where tutoring works wonders to provide extra practice and confidence, ensuring a high GPA for your student. It works, and it is worth the dollars!

I'm so glad my GMAT student improved upon his score!! He's in for BIG things...   Now, I'm looking for college students to tutor! I want to see even more successes this year!!    There is is a reason the student-to-teacher ratio was small in ancient times. IT WORKS!!! :)

Before I go run a marathon, play with my family at the pool, ride a roller coaster, head to the beach, or eat some serious amounts of ice cream, I will look back on the successful school year I have had. Excellent tutor! — Becky is a great tutor. She is exactly what we needed. We didn't need a regular math tutor...but, one who could help him prepare to re-take the SAT with the goal of increasing his Math score. My son really likes her teaching style. She challenges him and then follows up with a thorough explanation on anything he doesn't understand. I'm so glad I found this source and especially, Becky! ...
