Hello! My name is Deanna and I am excited to help you achieve and succeed in a variety of subjects, including math and science. I am an experienced tutor & teacher, who holds a Master's degree in Anatomy from Tulane University, as well as a Bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University, where I majored in Molecular & Cellular Biology and Medicine, Health & Society (an interdisciplinary major); I hope to share my love for learning and am also available for advice on preparing college applications.
I have a broad range of teaching experiences. Most recently, I taught Pre-Algebra at an underserved middle school in Memphis, Tennessee (2011-2012). In preparation for this experience, I underwent intensive teacher-training through the Memphis Teaching Fellows Program, a part of The New Teacher Project, and I received a transitional teaching license. Though this license has since expired, I have gained valuable experience managing classroom behavior and learning, developing lesson plans, tracking student data, and using creative manipulatives to facilitate learning.
I often tutored students after school as a middle school teacher, but I also gained valuable tutoring experience while at Vanderbilt University. There, I tutored Sudanese and Ethiopian immigrants in computer skills and English, mentored as a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, and taught interactive science labs to elementary school students. With my experiences with such diverse students, I am ready to help any student build confidence, skills, and expertise to bring them closer to achieving their goals.
I describe my teaching style as creative, hands-on, and fun. I know that students all have different ways of learning, and as a teacher, I try to maximize learning by using a student's strengths. I am organized, enthusiastic, patient, and will work hard (and smart) to help your student succeed!
If beneficial, I can also speak conversational German, Cantonese and Mandarin with students and/or parents to facilitate learning.
