I am a recent college graduate with an A.B. in Linguistics and a minor in German. I spent my junior year in Germany studying both German and English linguistics. While I was there, I was employed as a private English language tutor for a 10-year-old German/Bulgarian girl. I spent three hours a week with her teaching her English grammar and usage, but the main focus of our lesson was pronunciation. I volunteered with other American students for a project with the German-American Institute. There we developed a project to go to German high schools and teach the kids about American culture and to try to break down stereotypes. The experience was incredible. In both of these settings, I understood how important it is for both students and teachers to be comfortable with each other, and understanding a different culture/lifestyle is key.
I would like to tutor in English grammar and literature, and German language. I have found that through studying linguistics, I understand and can explain English more easily. I do not have my degree in English, but I have a different viewpoint from the traditional grammar teachings that I hope will make understanding grammar easier for a student. I enjoy literature, and I will read and re-read any work that I am unfamiliar with so that both I and the student will have the clearest understanding. I've spent my every semester in my college career in a German class, and I love explaining it to others.
These courses, along with my linguistic courses, have given me a better understanding of language learning. I wish that there had been a linguistics class in my middle school because my foreign language class would have been so much easier to understand. This is what I want to bring to these tutoring sessions. It will not be the main focus, because it would not be practical to try to teach a student all there is to know about linguistics in a tutoring session, but I want to incorporate it into the lesson, so that maybe it will make things easier in those English or foreign language classes. I enjoy working with young children and helping them achieve that moment of "Aha!" when they solve a problem.
I am currently a Sunday School teacher for children ages 6 - 10. I have a younger sibling who is in high school, and I help her with her studies sometimes. The age range for me is very wide. I work well with children as well as with older students. I am flexible with working hours, the exception being Sunday mornings. I am a Christian, but I do not hold any prejudices against anyone outside of my religion or beliefs. I am very easy-going and open-minded. I am an animal lover so pets big and small are not a problem for me. I can't wait to begin tutoring!
