I tutor algebra 1 (coordinate algebra), algebra 2 (advanced algebra), geometry, and pre-calculus. My name is Sharmila R. and you can call me Mrs. R. I have 10 years teaching experience in high and middle school, and I have my master's degree in math education with concentration in Middle and High School from Kennesaw State University. I have my bachelor's in mathematics and computer science. I have worked in the corporate world before entering the teaching field. Even in the corporate world I have conducted training and taught different Microsoft products.
I have been teaching for the past 10 years and have taught in both middle school and high school. Currently I'm teaching at a high school in Alpharetta and teach Coordinate algebra, analytical geometry, advanced algebra, and pre-calculus. I have taught all subjects in math which includes pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, algebra II, advanced algebra, trigonometry, and statistics. I'm also the Department head for my school. The majority of my teaching has been with Fulton County Schools. I have also collaborated with Georgia Tech to learn and incorporate relevant and best teaching practices. My broad experience is relevant that I can help every student achieve success in the study of mathematics.
My tutoring approach is very simple. I want to help and ensure that the student receives the maximum benefit from each session. I offer one-on-one help to my students and show them step by step process to solve the problem. I use differentiated instruction to help them using technology or manipulatives whenever required. I believe all students can learn and I can help them reach their desired grade in class. I have high expectations for my students and I know helping them in a tutoring session will help them have high expectation for themselves. I motivate my students by connecting mathematics to different aspects in life like engineering, the field of technology (cell phones), culinary arts, architecture, nature, and in music. Mathematics can be fun and I like for the environment to be one filled with excitement to learn. My personal feelings and beliefs about teaching are deeply rooted. I have found many rewards in teaching and I always want to give back to the community. I want to be able to give back something that I received from all the teachers who taught me. The highlight of my teaching and its rewards are the many students who come back to visit or who have written letters about their success stories. It is very rewarding to see all of my students become productive citizens of the society.
I believe in the saying that "Teachers make all other profession possible”. This statement has so much power since I as a teacher have the capability of touching and molding all my students. In spite of the challenges and the setbacks of the students, my goal is to educate all students and instill in them the love of learning.
In summary, I have taught math from 6th grade to 12th grade and I would like to teach using one-on-one and individualized instruction. I would concentrate on math skills which need more practice and build students confidence to become successful in math and ultimately in their school. I enjoy teaching and I just love it when students say "I get it". Tutoring allows innovative teaching methods which require doing what it takes so learning can take place. I'm willing to adapt to meet students' needs and getting them more involved with the mathematical process. My teaching and tutoring methods will create opportunities for students to learn in a safe and trusting environment.
