I often say I can teach a chipmunk to read! While I cannot, of course, exactly do that, three masters degrees and over three decades of teaching have made me really good at my trade.
I call myself the Roundtable Teacher because of my exceptional range of experience. Each day, for over 30 years, half my time was spent with
all ranges and varieties of handicapping conditions. The other half of the day was spent teaching Humanities to the Gifted, Talented and Advanced Progress kids.
The 16 year old down the street who was mute and not potty trained was my kid. My medical Dr. currently, was my kid. The range and the experience was extraordinary.
One hour I was holding a kids finger while we traced a sandpaper ABC because he was a tactile learner. The next hour the 30 gifted students were having a zesty roundtable discussion of the political awareness of third world cultures.
I was a Roundtable Teacher, for I believe, every known state of mankind sat round my table. The key was the ability to understand each kid, on
their own merits and more forward from that position, whatever that position was.
The power of success was grand, regardless of the level. For kid X to
learn the letter M, was just as powerful as kid xx discussing the political consequences of a foreign coup.
To tell you the most basic truth - I am just about the best I ever saw
at teaching handicapped kids - anybody can teach a basic to advanced level kid. I am not sure the reason for the gift. I am thinking that perhaps I don't really care where they are in their learning journey. That is not my job. I cannot remake nature or circumstance. I can however move the journey along. That is my job. I do have a personal goal when teaching that is additional to the actually teaching process. I want my kids to be happy in their journey. Teaching need not be a miserable process for student or teacher. The bottom line is; any kid is welcome at my roundtable.
