Hello there! My name is Mike. I have a passion for history and the written word. In addition, I have a passion for helping students see the potential that they have and helping them to access that potential. Let me explain what I mean.

Knowing how to communicate thoughts and ideas in written form is very important. "You only get one chance to make a first impression" is an old saying that applies to how you communicate through the written word. I have years of experience in presenting ideas in a positive and persuasive manner. I will take your book reports, essays and writing assignments and show you how to rewrite them in a style that is crisp and readable.

History is more than "In fourteen ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue." History is the story of how people lived out their lives and how it affected others. I will show you how to become inquisitive about learning not just what happened but why it happened. History does not have to be boring and monotonous. I can show you how history can come alive!

Through various volunteer outlets I have years and years of experience working with high school and middle school students. I am looking forward to meeting you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

History is not supposed to be boring. History is full of drama, excitement, mystery. For the most part, it's the story about what happened before you and I showed up. But it's also the story of why life in this country, the greatest country in history, is like it is.

I try to make American History exciting because it is exciting. Let's get together and I'll show you what I mean.

ASVAB

There is no need to worry about taking the ASVAB test. I can drill you in the basics so that you will pass with flying colors. Let's get together and I will show you how!

English

To be successful in the business world, it is important to use proper English. Improper English grammar makes a poor impression in the work place. It is not hard to learn the basics of grammar. I would be happy to show you how! Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

MIKE

General Computer

Getting the hang of using a computer can be frustrating and even scary. It can almost drive you crazy! I have years of experience in showing people how to master the basics of using a computer. I am really, really patient. When I teach you a few tricks of the trade you will be able to use your computer, too! Let's get together and I'll show you what I mean!

Government & Politics

Government and politics are the meat and potatoes of our Country's history. Understanding the rudiments of how the government is supposed to work are essential if you want to become involved in your community.

I know how to make it interesting. Let's get together!

Grammar

The way you use grammar in your written and oral communications reflects on you just as much as how you dress or comb your hair or brush your hair. "You only get one chance to make a first impression."

My task is to show you how to make good grammar work for you. Good grammar shouldn't be a chore. It should become second nature. Let's get together and I'll show you how!

Microsoft Excel

Excel is one of the most functional and flexible programs available in the office software marketplace. The only limitation to its functionality is the imagination of the user.

It is a very good use of time to become as well acquainted as possible with this very useful tool. I know a lot of "tricks of the trade" that I would like to teach you. Let's get together and I'll show you how!

Microsoft Outlook

Today’s business environment requires a person to be more productive than ever before. Outlook is an important tool to help you achieve that productivity. Actually, it allows the user to do the work of several people. Learning how to navigate through Outlook's functionality can be a challenge, however. I know how to use Outlook's features to help you get the most out of it.

What I do is start with the tasks that you are trying to accomplish. Then I walk you through those tasks, showing you how to use Outlook’s features to streamline the process. Finally I expand on those basic skills and show you how to accomplish even more tasks. A lot of people throw up their hands when they look at all that is involved in using Outlook. But I can show you how it is not as hard as it looks.

When I was with Procter & Gamble, we used Outlook in our daily business. When I took an early retirement I used that experience as I ventured out on my own.

I now own my own business. By using Outlook's features, I am able to do the work of several people. For example, I particularly like the “Rules” feature that allow me to automatically sort incoming emails into different folders. It saves me tons of time! It’s like having an electronic administrative assistant helping me. I can determine ahead of time certain categories of incoming emails. I create folders for those categories. Then I create “rules” that automatically move incoming emails that belong to those categories into those folders. In that way Outlook automatically organizes my workload to make me more efficient and productive.

Let's get together so that I can show you how much YOU can do with Outlook!

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is one of the basic tools in the Microsoft Office suite. It is also among the most useful and practical of the MS suite. Knowing the basics of Microsoft Word will help you handle all of those book reports and other school assignments. It's really not that hard! Let's get together and I'll show you how!

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last step in written communication. It's like polishing your shoes before you go out in public. It's really not all that hard. It's just about learning a few tricks of the trade. Let's get together and I'll show you how!

Reading

Let's get this straight. There is reading and then there is reading. You can read so that you can recite back to someone what the author said. Then you can read so that you become part of the story and can explain what the author really meant. It's really not that hard. Let's get together and I'll show you how.

SAT Writing

Wherever I go people tell me that they like the way I write. They always tell me that I write very clearly and concisely. I would like to show you how to do the same on your SAT exam!

Social Studies

Let's start with having passed the Georgia Assessment for Certification in Education (GACE) examination for Early American History (up to 1914) and Modern American History (1914 to the Present) this past March. In addition I have been a lifelong student of history. I believe that I can help you master the essentials of High School Social Studies.

Study Skills

I have considerable experience helping students with study skills. Starting with my own children, I always emphasize having a set time and place to study. I really excel at helping young people work on school projects.

I'm really good at showing students how to tackle a huge project that looks insurmountable. My motto is "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!" I show students how to break down tasks into bite sized pieces and then organizing them into a realistic schedule. I know how to help people achieve more than they thought they could. I have lots of patience and am really, really easy to work with. I would like to show you what I mean!

Vocabulary

A good vocabulary is the meat and potatoes of effective oral communication. It's what will set you apart in an increasingly competitive job market. It's not that hard. Let's get together and I'll show you how!

World History

World History is not supposed to be dull and boring. I try to emphasize the "story" part of history. When you approach history that way, it starts to become interesting and fun! It's not that hard. Let's get together, and I'll show you what I mean!

Writing

Being able to sit down and put down on paper what you are thinking about is not important -- it is absolutely essential in today's world. It takes a few tricks of the trade. I bet you'll find out it's not really that hard. Let's get together, and I'll show you how!
