About Scott

Need help with math? I offer over 12 years of expert math teaching and tutoring experience. I have two masters degrees from Georgia Tech (Applied Mathematics 1994, Statistics 1995) and I'm a full-time math instructor at Chattahoochee Technical College. I speak clear, easy to understand English. I'm highly skilled in all areas of math including probability, statistics,, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus. I'm patient and detailed with my explanations, helping students understand not just how to work a problem, but why the problem works that way. From my days as a governor's honors high school student at McEachern, to my perfect 800 on the math SAT, to my days as a highest honor graduate at Georgia Tech, to a rich local career as a high school and college teacher, I can offer you a level of expertise and assistance that few tutors can. I'm known for making math look easy... because once you understand what to do, it can be. And if it makes sense, you'll remember what to do. Just as I've helped students learn to master math in my classroom, I can help anyone with a willing attitude succeed. Need help with math? Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

Although I did not take the ACT as a student, I received a perfect math score on similar tests such as the SAT and GRE. It will be hard to find more qualified college prep test help in Metro Atlanta.

Calculus

My qualifications for teaching and tutoring Calculus are extensive, but I also pride myself on simple, clear explanations. I took calculus AB in high school and scored a perfect 5 on the AP Exam and 800 on the math SAT. Then I took honors Calculus at Georgia Tech and made straight A's. I served as a undergraduate and graduate teaching assistant, where I answered student questions about homework assignments and later taught my own courses. Since then I have years of high school and college teaching experience, including teaching pre-calculus and tutoring local Calculus and pre-calculus students.

Discrete Math

Discrete mathematics involves finding and proving solutions to problems when answers are limited to whole numbers instead of decimals or fractions. Many real life problems require choices of whole units, such as how many items to purchase or how many people to place on a committee. These types of problems require a different approach than solving for any number on the number line. We must also show that we have "best" choice available. I have vast experience with such optimizations from taking courses such as Combinatorics and Probability and Statistics. I have also tutored students taking the traditional college Discrete Math course. I am familiar with often included topics including linear programming, rules of logic, graph theory, game theory, number theory, and various solution algorithms. I am also well versed in types of proofs including direct, induction, and contradiction.

Linear Algebra

I took several linear algebra courses while at Georgia Tech. Matrices are one of my favorite topics in all of math. I've seen them used in advance statistics classes and enjoyed teaching the linear algebra portion of the Calculus sequence as a graduate student. If linear algebra is throwing you off track, I can help.

Precalculus

I presently teach Precalculus at Chattahoochee Tech. I have also taught Calculus at the college level, so I am able to help prepare students for the highest levels of math. What sets me apart is the ability to provide simple and clear explanations of advanced concepts.

Probability

Probability and Statistics is one of my favorite areas of math. I first studied these topics at the Governor Honors Program the summer before my senior year of high school and continued those studies in my coursework at Georgia Tech, where I obtained a Master of Science degree in Statistics. I have taught Statistics, AP Statistics, and/or College Statistics for over 5 years. Every year I taught AP, had at least one student score a perfect 5 on the AP exam. You will be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable or qualified probability and statistics tutor in the metro Atlanta area.

SAT Math

I received a perfect score of 800 on the SAT Math section in 1987, and did it again with 800 on the GRE Math section in 1992. You won't find better help with SAT practice problems in Metro Atlanta.

Statistics

Statistics is one of my favorite areas of math. I first studied this topic at the Governor Honors Program the summer before my senior year of high school and continued related studies in my coursework at Georgia Tech, where I obtained a Master of Science degree in Statistics. I have taught Statistics, AP Statistics, and/or College Statistics for over 5 years. Every year I taught AP, had at least one student score a perfect 5 on the AP exam. You will be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable or qualified statistics tutor in the metro Atlanta area.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is the study of measures within triangles, which leads to the important functions sine, cosine, and tangent. Understanding the relationship between these functions allows the student to find missing side and angle measures given other clues about a triangle. With extensive experience, I am able to guide students into unlocking the mystery of right triangles as well as other types of triangles.

Excellent tutor! — Scott is a very professional and patient tutor. He has a great understanding of mathematics and is able to take his knowledge and explain it in a way that makes sense. It seems like a lot of mathematics professors have difficulty helping students understand a tough concept, but Scott is able to explain concepts in a way that is easy to understand and helpful. I would highly recommend him to anyon ...
