I am a Reading Specialist and Early Childhood classroom teacher with a Master's degree and 20 years experience. My private and public school experience includes working as a classroom teacher (K-5), reading and learning specialist, and as a tutor for Pre-K through adult.
It is very important for me to meet students at their level. I do this through conducting informal assessments, gleaning information from formal reports and IEPs (if relevant), and determining the student's learning style.
In beginning reading, students learn the mechanics of reading—phonics, blending skills, sight words, sentence and paragraph reading, fluency, and basic comprehension. I have used Orton-Gillingham techniques to teach structured, sequential phonics.
From 3rd grade on, students move from “learning the read” to “reading to learn.” This important function requires good literal and inferential comprehension skills. These are critical to the success of a student in any subject matter and at any grade. I use numerous techniques to help children comprehend fiction and non-fiction material. I am a firm believer that these must be taught and practiced for a student to apply them in school.
In addition, I have taught and tutored math in the elementary grades. My experience includes Everyday Math and Saxon math for students with learning differences. I utilize many “tricks and techniques” to help students who have difficulty with computation.
I am a patient teacher who works to help your student achieve success in their academic environment. I look forward to working with you!
