I experienced difficulty in school and had teachers and a tutor that chose to put me on the spot rather than teach. I graduated with honors and have gone on to teach in Christian, Montessori, Private, and Special Education schools. I have a current Georgia certificate with Orton Gillingham training and prefer to teach to a student's needs rather than state standards. At five years old I knew I wanted to teach and for almost 38 years, the same time I've been married to my husband, I have done just that. My experience fostered the ability for each our four children to develop to their greatest potential and become high end learners. I respect attention spans for students and listen carefully to their questions. I will teach as you guide because you know your children best. As a partnership I believe we can inspire your students to learn. I prefer to tutor with you home as a comfort to your student. If at anytime I detect a learning block I will communicate that and commit to not simply taking advantage of your hard earned funds. Please contact me so we can set a new direction for your child.

Autism

The Swift School also had some low level autistic students. My primary exposure came from Montessori International Academy in Marietta where I worked for a year, alone with autism in a gifted 5 year old who spoke 6 languages. Behaviorally I was challenged to teach him conflict resolution, group activity, waiting for a turn, being told 'no'(without screaming episodes), using rest time quietly, standing in line with diminished outbursts and assaults of maliciousness on other students and staff. We developed a strong bond and I worked with the parent, public school and support staff to mainstream all of his giftedness by 6 years old.

Dyslexia

Many parents attempt home school children who display dyslexic symptoms. In the public classroom setting they appear slow, labeled 'stupid', often lack time concepts, tangle word pronunciations as they read slowly and use library time to act out. Not understanding letter sounds, blends, dipthongs, digraphs a page with letters for words is a huge challenge, They are embarrassed by reading and comprehension in any academic arena becomes defeating.

The Swift School gave me 3 marvelous years of exposure to techniques that can change a willing student into a stellar learner in 4-5 years with Orton Gillingham methodology. My own sister in law is Dyslexic but had no intervention, as 1000's of adults today, who have developed coping skills to get by.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a current Georgia Certificate and I can provide the number if necessary. My degree from UNH was in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and an additional major in English. In Georgia, I am listed as P-8.

Grammar

Grammar is all the English learned through sixth grade. All nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, synonyms, antonymns, homonymns, pronouns (common, proper), articles, prepositions, conjunctions, and subject/predicate agreement. Taking this knowledge, applying punctuation, intonation, and opinion produces successful written and spoken word. Grammar is basically what makes us sound intelligent and too often secures successful job interviews.

Phonics

I was schooled in a certification program for Orton Gillingham which is a very successful phonics program for students with Dyslexia or language related learning differences. Foundationally, it was the format for my reading block section of my B.A. in Elementary Education at the University of New Hampshire. Phonemic sounds are used to decode words of any length. Learning diphthongs, digraphs and blends is the only way a person can gauntlet our convoluted English language.

Public Speaking

I have owned my own travel company for ten years, taking student and teacher groups to Boston and Washington D.C. I solely facilitated all of the Washington channels to arrange private tours of every conceivable kind. I wrote the book the students worked through on their week away. I was the sole presenter at each site speaking often to private groups of 150 at a time. As a Lifetime PTA member and president and vice president for our high school of 2500 students I spoke regularly to parenting groups of up to 500+. I was requested to speak at The Association of Christian Schools International on the topic of Creativity in the Classroom. I am comfortable in this arena and feel I could bring some quality insights to anyone wanting guidance.

Reading

I have worked with many challenged learners. Reading is a core necessity for performance in ALL other study arenas. My approach is Orton Gillingham, in which I was trained at The Swift School in Roswell, Georgia. I worked with children who are Dyslexic and have other learning disabilities for 3 years. The approach is heavily phonics based with an emphasis on letter and blend sounds. It empowers the student to break a word into parts and look for repeated patterns. Having taught for 37 years now, reading has been at the basis of all my teaching time. I have a college major in English and worked on a Masters for Reading Difficulties in Children.

Sewing

At 13 I took two full weeks of 8 hour a day sewing classes with my creative Russian aunt. She sewed draperies, made slipcovers, Barbie clothes, ballet outfits for whole dance troupes and clothes for her own 3 children. I sewed my entire trousseau for my wedding travel, made over my mother's designer clothes to fit me in high school and sewed most of my high school clothing. I made gowns in college for sororities, along with making all of my bridesmaids gowns. While my daughter was in high school doing drama I picked up 350 costumes that had to be fitted for "Hello Dolly." For one of the performances I created all the headpieces and matching skirts from my imagination with no patterns. Sewing continues to be a joyful creative venture of choice for me. I would love to pass along my passion.

Study Skills

I have worked for nearly 38 years in all types and sizes of classes and schools. Having raised 4 very successful personal child learners into adulthood I feel fully qualified to teach this skill. Study Skills is that ability to spot the key elements within a subject area. Retaining that info through drills, flash cards, recording devices or any other clever techniques to secure measurable results on testing. It calls for a clear direction from the starting point to the finale. Done in a neat organized manner, memory, paced concentration, motivation and time management all factor into a quality outcome. For most students it is acquired over all the years of school with an emphasis in 6th grade as a prep for middle and high school and eventually college. Remediating missed study skills is a somewhat time consuming task as it often calls for reworking all the misdirected thinking patterns that create confusion in an ultimate workplace.
