I love math. I love the way it fits together, the way it works, the way that when you see a pattern, something that always seems to work, that there must a mathematical reason behind it. But I know that everyone doesn't love math the way that I do. It is my mission to help students understand math, to see how it fits together, and to become independent, successful learners. I know that takes time and consistency, both of which I am more than willing to provide.
I am a former math teacher, and a former teacher educator. I have a bachelor's degree in Applied Math from Brown University, and a Masters and PhD in Cognitive Psychology, also from Brown University. And now, in semi-retirement, I find immense joy tutoring students who need an extra boost. I tutor students from elementary school through Algebra II and Trigonometry. I get to know students, their strengths and their challenges. I help them to see how what is new builds on what they have already learned. I give assignments to help deepen understanding, and to develop independent thinking skills. Oh yes, and I do help students understand what they are stumped on in the moment. But "understanding" is my goal -- I don't focus on quick tricks, but on lasting and deep learning.
I hold myself to a high standard and ask for feedback from students and parents. I never bill for a tutoring session if the student or parent is not completely satisfied. While I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I often provide make-up sessions.
I usually tutor students in a public library close to their home, however I will travel to another location if that is more convenient for the student.

Making the student understand WHY — Making the student understand 'WHY' is a mark of a good teacher. Dr. Ido wants her students to understand why they are doing what they are doing - not just memorize the steps, but understand the reasons for those steps.
