I have been in the education field for over 10 years. I have taught students in preschool through high school, and also have experience as a job coach. I am currently pursuing my M.Ed in curriculum and instruction.

I love reading, writing and research, and I am now working on three children's books and a curriculum book. I also enjoy singing and dancing; and I love classic books and films. I have received several awards for excellence in teaching, volunteer work and academics.

I am patient with students, as my aim is to help them achieve an understanding of whatever they are learning. Each student's personal learning pace is crucial to me, because it determines how much time and practice she or he needs to grasp an understanding of subject matter. I also take each student's individual learning style into account in order to effectively foster and facilitate understanding.

I believe that a sense of humor plays a huge part in any experience to lessen stress or tension. My priority is to help each student feel and be successful. My hope is to empower each one to believe in him- or herself.

I believe that communication between all stakeholders - student, parent and teacher - is key. This clarifies goals and purpose. I am here to help and serve you.

Vocabulary

Refers to the knowledge, use, and meaning of words. Vocabulary plays an important part in communication, reading, and reading comprehension.

Grammar

The study of the words - their inflections and functions, and how they relate in a sentence.

Reading

Involves word recognition as well as the comprehension and interpretation of what is written.

Writing

Writing is the concrete representation of thought through the use of letters, words, symbols, characters and numbers. It can be accomplished by using materials such as pencils and pens, or technology such as computers. It involves spelling, grammar, and proofreading. Writing can be used to explain, describe, record, communicate, correspond or compose information.

Proofreading

Proofreading is primarily used to search your writing for grammatical and typographical errors, before submitting it to an audience, such as a teacher or a publisher. It involves the use of specific symbols and abbreviations which indicate how, where, and why the document needs to be corrected.

Spelling

Spelling involves:
1.Phonics - the grouping of words such as: an, man, can
2. Syllabication - learning to divide words such as: mul-ti-pli-ca-tion; dic-ta-tion
3. Prefixes and Suffixes - what they mean and how to use them
4. Rules for plurals and possessives and for adding suffixes such as: when the y is preceded by a consonant, change the y to i and add es
5. Learning to pronounce words correctly to spell correctly
6. Learning the basic sight words

Elementary Math

Elementary math consists of basic concepts relating to addition, multiplication, division, subtraction and algebra. It also relates to knowing and calculating measurements, identifying money (bills and coins), and calculating totals and making change. It also involves fractions, decimals, rounding and estimation. It includes number and word problems; and students are expected to move from concrete thinking (use of objects and fingers) to mental thinking ("doing things in their head").

Phonics

My experience with pre-K to 2nd graders has proven that learning phonics is an essential part of enabling children to become independent readers. When it comes to teaching children to read, there is no question that teaching them to read using the phonics system is far more effective than the whole language method. Children need to develop a knowledge of letters, their sounds (phonemes), and how combining (blending) letters and their sounds form words.

Study Skills

Study Skills are strategies applied for learning effectively. This includes effectively taking in, managing, organizing, retaining, and recalling information.
